Actually, many doctors recommend taking prentals while you are trying to concieve, (I am).  Some even recommend that all women of child bearing age take prentals because you COULD become pregnant, intentionally or otherwise.  Take what you have now, and if your doctor wants you on a different kind/type, you can discuss that at your appointment.

@MrsWBS:  +1 Agreed! OBGYN’s actually reccommend that you should start taking prenatal vitamins at least 3 months before getting a bfp (Actually my doc reccommended at least a year, and my GYN said that really any woman of child bearing age should take them.) I believe the reasoning behind it is that some things like folic acid/folate need to build up in your system and are actually most important in those early weeks.

So definitely start taking them and don’t worry about it! But also don’t freak out that you’re just starting now. Plenty of women don’t know this, start when they see a BFP, and have happy healthy babies!

Congratulations!

I took folic acid for months before I got pregnant. Definitely start prenatals ASAP!

Definitely start taking them now! The folic acid is most important in the first several weeks to avoid neurological complications like spina bifida. Congrats!

Girl I was taking them before I eve conceived. Way to go! Congrats! don’t worry about cramping to much.. I had a lot of that and everything is fine. I found that OTC prenatala don’t have nearly enough folic acid, usually only 800mcg, you need at least 1mg, so when you have time go buy folic acid vitamins. I think they come in 400 ‘mcg tabs so just add that to your prenatal, and you will be taking a little over 1mg, which is great!

I took them before I got pregnant, but congrats!!! Continue taking them! Also make sure your prenatals have DHA in them, if not you can buy those separately for like $12 for a months supply. DHA helps with brain development and other important things.

Some doctors even go so far as recommending women who are in fertile age should be taking a prenatal, TTC or not.

So yes, I think starting them now is a good idea 🙂

I personally take a prenatal every day. Took them before I was TTC, while i was pregnant, breastfeeding, and now that I am waiting to ttc.. lol I just keep it in my daily routine. Can’t hurt!
