I was there for one day as part of a cruise and it left a lasting impression on me. Infact it's the only island we visited on that cruise that left a lasting impression. It's absolutely gorgeous. We went hiking through a rainforest and swam in a clear waterfall at the bottom of the forest. It was AMAZING.
Unfortunately I can't offer any advice on the practicalities of going there or where to stay seeing as I was only there for one day. Have an awesome time no matter where you go!

I've been there 2x for one day each time as part of a cruise! It is a beautiful island, and I've enjoyed each visit so much that I've considered going back for a week a few times.
Sorry, I can't help you with much else. A week in Dominica sounds so fun though! :)
Thanks, Ladies! Any feedback helps since we booking entirely online. We decided on 3 nights at Jungle Bay and 5 nights at Papillote Wilderness Retreat. Woot! Dominica, here we come!!!

Honeymoons should be relaxing and fun and adventurous. Mine was too!!! We booked our honeymoon online with a few sites and went to Greece and did the relaxing and the adventure. If you can afford to go to costa rica or somewhere in that area you could do all the things you want to do in a safer environement and they have better snorkeling, wilderness, etc. If its a $$ thing try doing a honeymoon registry for your guests so you can afford to go somewhere that has everything you want. We used happyhoneymoons.ca and booked our trip by ourselves and then collected donations for greece. It paid for over $4000 of our trip. Just an idea so you can really do everything you want! hope this helps! gl

I went on a cruise last May w/ my boyfriend and we stopped in Dominica. We did a lot of research on cruise critic and decided that we wanted to go on a hike in Dominica because it's really unspoiled. I contacted Levi from Bumpiingtours.com (great reviews on cruiste critic) and he organized a private tour for me and my bf. His worker, Garry, took us on an hour 1/2 hike to a waterfall, we were alone at a waterfall in the middle of a jungle, I've never seen anything like it. Also, we were alone the entire time because Garry knew the cruise tour schedules so we never dealt with the masses.
Among other sites, we hiked to:
Middleham Falls-swam and dove in the falls. We actually swung on vines like Tarzan while we hiked. The Falls are beautiful and unlike anything I have ever seen.
Trafalgar Falls-swam in natural hot springs
Titou gorge-Swam through a cavern and another waterfall.
Dominica was my favorite island, I'd at least do a few days there and def contact Levi from bumpiing tours!!! If you have any other questions you can private message me.
oh my goodness, I totally was trying to remember which tour guide I used - it was the same as lizzyh! We also used Levi of Bumpiing tours! He's fantastic! I totally 2nd the recommendation!
I haven't been there for about 10 years, but it is one of the most amazing places I have ever been!!!
They don't have much as far as beaches go ... but they have a boiling lake and FOR SURE, ask someone how to get to the waterfall with both hot and cold running water (one side hot/one side cold) ... there is a hot springs at hte top on one side. Wild.

My fiance has been researching Dominica in the Caribbean (not DR), and we're thinking of it for our honeymoon in January 2009. It's more of an adventure island, and we definitely don't want to sit on the beach for our week away. Has anyone been there? Our priorities: hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, etc.
Where did you stay and what did you think of it? How long would you advise going? (It seems tiny, but there's a lot to do!) Did you see any sites or do any activities that shouldn't be missed? Did you rent a car? I hear driving there is crazy...We are thinking of Jungle Bay Resort and Papillote Wilderness Retreat. Right now we are thinking of 8 days, and renting a car for maybe half the time...
