If so - do you find it useful?  How many steps on average are you supposed to take?  Any down sides to it?

i used one for a while while i was working. it was cool knowing how many steps i was taking and i think mine also converted it to miles as well. a downside though was i  realized that it was calculating steps when i was rocking in my chair! so all my results were unreliable. i tried to take it off while i sat at the desk but then i'd forget to put it back on whenever i'd get up so i stopped using it.

I use the pedometer on my ipod nano! It has been a great motivator. I wear it at work all day and if at the end of the day I see I haven't reached my goal I will walk to the employee parking lot (20 mins away). I also use it while walking the dogs and running errands.  It helps me to know I just need a few more steps.  They say the minimum is 10,000 steps each day so I always try for 15,000. Its hard, but I can track myself with a pedometer.

I have tried with the Go Zone pedometer that we were provided. The downside of it is that if it is hooked on the right way to your waistband, it may not count a lot of steps you take. And with my line of work, I step a lot side to side and that isn't counted on the pedometer. My boss also noticed that if she hits it a certain way, that it will count even if she doesn't move. So there are good and bad to it I think.
