Is a first floor apt really terrible? We signed a lease for an apartment on the first floor (the only one they had coming open) and we reaaaally want to live there. But, is living on the first floor miserable? We have the option to “upgrade” to a townhome (bigger, own garage, etc) for like an extra 100 bucks a month.
Should we upgrade? Or is the first floor really not that bad. They are fairly new apartments, so I don’t think creaking floorboards will be an issue. Any suggestions?

if its just $100 more i would definitely upgrade. First floor isnt bad but it also depends on the neighbors upstairs. We have some that love to stomp loudly every morning and we hear it all.

I love having a garage, but it gets cold and snowy here. Not having to clean off your car is awesome. For an extra $100 I’d probably upgrade.

I would upgrade, i own a top floor condo and kinda hate it
The major decision factor for me would be the people aboves age.

@futurepilotswife_: We’ve lived on a top floor and a bottom floor. Either way it doesnt matter to us but we would def take the upgrade for a garage!!!!

I hate a ground floor apartment. If you have a deck/patio, then you can’t put anything out there for fear of it getting stolen. You have to keep all the windows closed and locked. Your apartment will be the target for theft – not the floors above you – since there is easier access to yours. Plus, you do have noisy neighbors above. It’s a pain! My FI’s flat also has the added annoyance that it is right by the front entrance, so every single night and every single morning when we’re tucked away in bed, we’re rudely awoken by drunk neighbors stumbling home late at night and all the early birds heading to work at dawn.
Yeah, I hate ground floor flats. Haha. Definitely upgrade.

No brainer for me. I would def be in a townhome w a garage vs a first floor apartment

I would upgrade, but I guess it depends on how tolerable you are. We had a first floor apartment for a year, that’s about all I could handle. The people who lived upstairs seriously walked like elephants (and they were tiny people!). They would wake us up all hours of the night stomping around. They also had a baby that would cry non-stop. Before living there we had an upstairs apartment. It was better but still not ideal. We could literally hear the guy below us slamming his cupboards closed (it was like he did it on purpose because it would go on and on) We currently live in a townhome and I can now say that I don’t think I would ever go back to living in an apartment. It is SO much nicer. We don’t have anyone living below us or above us, just next to us. We occassionally hear the neighbors to the left of us, but it’s nothing like living in an apartment. Hope this helps and good luck!

I would upgrade. I lived in a first floor apt when I had DS and liked it b/c I didn’t have to carry him up the stairs but that was the sole reason we chose it. Had we not had him we would’ve looked for another option.
Now we live in a townhouse style apt & I love it b/c it feels much more homey than a single floor apt. I’m not sure what they layout of yours would be but ours is living, kitchen, dining downstairs & bedrooms upstairs.
For 100 bucks a month I think it’s worth the upgrade.

Go with the upgrade! I live on the 3rd floor right now and I am so paranoid about FI or my son making noise and being too loud for the people downstairs. We are moving into a house in 2 months! So I would definitely go with the upgrade!!! Good luck with whatever you decide 🙂

That’s what I’m leaning toward! My FI sleeps like a freaking rock, but I can wake up at the sound of a pin dropping, so townhome it is!
@bowsergirl: I haven’t even really thought about that. Plus, the one the signed for was an extra $10.00 a month because we have a “private view”, well turns out, it back out onto a field… No thanks. I would be home alone quite a bit because some of his trips are 3-4 days & I would not be okay with that!

1st floor apartment is awful. You have so many shared walls, and of course, the dreaded upstairs neighbors. We just bought a townhome, and hands down, it’s SO MUCH better. Only have 2 shared walls, more space, nobody above or below you, etc. $100/mo is hardly anything, i’d definitely upgrade!

Upgrade!! I used to live in a ground floor apartment and hated it! The people upstairs made so much noise! I think it would def be worth the extra $100

My first apartment was 3rd floor & the only downside we encountered there was a slightly higher electricity bill. I think it had more to do with the complex than actually living on the 3rd floor though. I then moved to a 1st floor and HATED it!!!!! I had more bugs, my bedroom was right under the stairs & drunk college girls clomping their heels on the stairs at all hours of the night drove me NUTS. I never opened my window for fear of bugs & the fact that you always heard parking lot conversations, when it was cool outside I couldn’t leave my window open overnight, & car alarms & parking lot car lights would wake me up too. I feel safer on the 3rd floor, I can open my sliding glass door, there’s no stomping above me…overall it’s 100x better. It’s even worth going up & down the stairs 100 times bringing in groceries lol

@futurepilotswife_: We have a first floor and its terrible. We can hear the people walking around upstairs all the time, we can even hear the bed squeak when they have sex. Also, our apartment is like half underground so the windows are tiny and there is very litle sunlight. Never again will I get a 1st floor apartment. We’re paying 100 more for a top floor starting in June and I can’t wait.
