    Hi bees. I am transplanting from Iowa to Minnesota (twin cities) this fall, having never even been to minnesota before. I have no idea where to look for an apartment. I don't know anyone to ask where the good side of town is/ what area(s) I should stay away from/ where I would be happiest to live/where would be a safe place to live/etc. I've never lived in a big city before, so I'm scared I'm going to end up in a trashy place crawling with roaches or something, while streching my budget as far as it can go.   Sooo, I'm looking to you for some advice.

    -I am going to (hopefully) be attending the U of M, and would prefer to be close-ish to there/ transportation to where I need to go. (I don't know how campus is set up, having never been there before.)
    - I am a college student, with a part time job at this point, so 600/month is pretty much my max.
    - I am leaning towards living alone (I am sick of roommates)
    - Ideally, I am looking for suggestions for specific complexes, but general areas would be a big help too!

    @nottoocool4school:

    I live in uptown - I pay $780 for a one bedroom apartment, but I think cheaper is definitely available (based on craigslist searches).  Uptown is great because there are express buses that go to the U pretty regularly (I'm at the U), lots of stores/restaurants, and a very walkable area.  Its particularly good if you dont want to be in the middle of college town, but still want to go out with a collegy crowd at night. Think a much smaller Lakeview (Chicago), if that means anything.

    Good luck!

    if you own your own car you could live in St. Louis Park, osseo, roseville, brooklyn park,  these are all burbs about a half hour away from the U of M
