I’m doing some research on Apple TV and trying to figure out if I need it. I have a smart TV, so I have WiFi access, but I think it’s cool if my MacBook can sync to my TV (just not exactly sure how it all works).
Any advice from techy/apple-gurus out there?

Well, what do you want to use the AppleTV for that you aren’t already doing with the SmartTV? I haven’t looked into what SmartTV’s do/don’t do, but I have had an AppleTV for 2 years.
I’m going to assume you can already access Netflix through SmartTV (that’s the #1 thing I use my AppleTV for).
Do you have an iPod or an iPhone? I don’t have a Macbook, but the AppleTV can detect my iPod Touch on the same wifi network, which allows me to stream movies, Pandora, or my music collection through my TV. And since it connects via wifi, I can change songs from anywhere in the house, using my iPod as the remote.
When it “syncs” with your Macbook it only syncs the media files in your iTunes account. So that would be limited to movies, songs, tv shows, podasts etc in your iTunes.

We have one and love it. I like that I can stream anything that I’m watching on my iPad, MacBook or iPhone to the Apple TV and watch it on the big screen. It’s user friendly (like most Apple products) and dependable. I have no complaints. For as cheap as the device is ($100), it’s well worth it, IMO.

We got one as a wedding present and have definitely liked using it. We used to plug my husband’s laptop into our tv all the time to watch netflix, and it’s nice to not have to worry about all of the extra cords AND we can use my laptop or our phones too!
