Recently, I’ve been applying for positions at universities. For nearly every position to which I’ve applied, a person from the organization has viewed my LinkedIn profile within the week.
Has anyone else had this experience?
Do you think this is a good or bad development?
What are the implications?
After I noticed this, I sure put more work into my profile!

That’s pretty much what LinkedIn is meant for. They want to see if they know anyone who knows you, verify the info on your resume, looking to see if you have any recomendations, see if there is more info about you, etc.
In my opinion this is a good development. Tools like LinkedIn are basically an online resume that can be a lot more robust than a paper resume. One implication is that you can’t lie on your LinkedIn profile (or if you do you are much more likely to be caught). The big one though is that it makes it easier for recruiters to seach and find you, even for a job that you have not applied for.
