I’ve been engaged since August 31, 2013, and I have resisted trying on any gowns AT ALL! Now that I’m almost to the year out mark, I have finally made an appointment to try on dresses on March 11th. My moms exSIL (from her first marriage) owns a bridal salon, and they remained good friends so thats where we’re going. Shes even keeping the store open after hours JUST for us!! I am SO excited, bees!! FI and I have been together over 9 years now, and to think, after all these years of watching SYTTD, I finally get my moment to try dresses on! I am bringing a huge group, because these are people i feel MUST be there. My 4 BMs, mom, stepmom, FMIL, and both grandmothers.
During the appointment, I’m going to have my MOH bring 2 long stem roses which I will bring out and give to each of my grandmothers and ask them to be my flower girls! They’re gonna freak!
So, bees, any advice on this first shopping day? We’ll only be hitting up this one store the first day. I haven’t declared I have to find it then, or that i cannot find it then. Also confused on what kind of undergarments to wear… strapless bra for sure, but are spanx necessary? Thanks ladies 🙂

@theEguarantee: Oh how exciting! I wore a strapless bra and some modest undies, but the store I went to have me a longline bra and slip to wear so I was a bit more covered up. I would definitely eat before you go. Taking those dresses on and off can be exhausting!!! Also when I went I was so nervous trying on dresses for the first time I started sweating (ewww). I really wished I had brought some backup deodorant at that time. Good luck I hope you find THE dress! 🙂

@theEguarantee: Take a bottle of water!! And a camera – I found it astonishing to see how the various dresses photographed – some looked great in photos, others not so much….. I wore Spanx because it helped the dresses slide on and off better.

Honestly I just took my bra off once I started putting dresses on, so if you’re comfortable with that, you don’t need to worry about what kind of bra to wear. Nude underwear is a good idea. Spanx only if you really think it’ll make you feel more comfortable. You’re gonna get hot and sweaty changing in and out of dresses, so you don’t want to wear too many layers. And have fun!! The feeling you get the first time you see yourself in a wedding dress is really unique.

I second the bottle of water!

@theEguarantee: Which store are you going to? I’ve been to a couple stores and I thought wearing spanx made it easier to get some of the dresses on.

Def. eat something before you go, but not so much that you get a food baby. I almost passed out at my last appt. because I was running late and didn’t grab breakfast or even a glass of water. They had to help me out of the dress. Totally avoidable.
If they will let you, bring a bottle of water. and a Camera. I loved dresses while I was there, but then I went home and hated them the next day after looking at pictures. I didn;’t really like my dress while I was there, but after looking at it in pictures, I’ve realized how gorgeous it was. Funny how that works!
Most will ask you to bring a strapless bra, or will provide one for you. For some of them I just took it off completely. They’ve seen it all, believe me. I wore whatever color modest undies, but I’m sure if you showed up in a lace thong, they would not think twice. You will not need spanx (or in my case the booty booster) until your first fitting.

@theEguarantee: That’s so exciting! Enjoy!
My only advise is take a deep breath and don’t let yourself get too overwhelmed. I was super excited for my first experience and had my mum and bridesmaids join me – we went to three stores and I tried on a tonne of dresses and by the end of the day I was so tired and had a massive migraine! It was just super overwhelming and quite exhausting!
Just take it easy, wear super comfy, light weight clothes (you’ll get really hot climbing in and out of dresses!) and remember you don’t have to do it all in one go!
You may not have this problem but I also found I got a little down when trying on the dresses coz they’re all super tiny sample sizes! (obviously to use less fabric but still..) I felt like a fatty – even though i’m a totally average size! So wear underwear you don’t mind other people seeing just in case 😉
Sorry that all sounds worse than I meant it to haha – don’t let me scare you! With all that said, it was an incredibly lovely, memorable experience I will always treasure!

@theEguarantee: Have fun! I brough a pair of heels, but found the rest (lingerie, etc) wasn’t ase ncesessary. What underoos you wear will depend on the dress, so while you won’t really need it for dress shopping, you will for a fitting once you order your dress. Hope you hae fun!
