I worked at an upscale day spa during college. There I was taught that anywhere from 10-20% is considered "kosher" for the industry. I’d say it depends on your budget. I usually stick closer to 20% (for haircuts and such) if I possibly can. Hope this helps.

Hi snmcdowell,

I second Bonniebelle101. I also worked through a couple of years of college as a manicurist at a high end full service salon and it was the same for us.

gratuity?! Doesn’t she already get to keep all that $430? I don’t think she needs to be tipped if its her own freelance business. If she works for a salon maybe 10%?

It’s always common courtesy to tip 20% unless she did not do a good job, then you tip 10%-15%.

I’ve always tipped 15-20% depending on how well they do my hair or nails. Maybe it’s because I am a server who works for tips and know how it is.
