Hi ladies/and possibly some gents! I am in the infancy of my planning, but I know that catering is one of those things I need to get out of the way asap however, I have no idea where to begin with pricing. The total budget for my shindig is $40k with 150 guests. If any of you have had similar numbers to work with, I would GREATLY appreciate some direction. Obviously, I understand that not everyone spent money in the same places, but it would be nice to have a ballpark.
Thanks for your help!

@sarahharkness: numbers can depend on your location. where are you thinking of getting married (city, state)?

I have no idea for your area, but I would imagine most catering starts at about $20 per person and goes on up from there. I know places like NYC/Chicago/CA can run upwards of $100+ per person for food and alcohol.
Depends on what type of food you want. I’d probably plan on $30-$70 plus any service charges or staff costs. I would guess you wouldn’t need any more than that because you are supplying your own alcohol?
The best thing you can do is start emailing caterers in that area and ask for some quotes. They can usually do this through email and it will give you a really exact idea of what you’re looking at. A lot of this depends on what you want to serve, buffet or plated, if you want a cocktail hour, or late night snack, etc.
Mine will be about $33.50 per person for food (buffet, tax, service charge). My alcohol is through the venue at a separate cost. My cake is separate cost too. My total rental fees, food, alcohol, cake is a little under 50% of my budget, about 43%.

Reception should be 50% so 20,000 total for 150 people is: $133 a person including cake, alcohol, dinner, etc.
