If you want one, then go for it! Who cares if it is overdone. If your family hasn't been to a lot of weddings recently, they probably haven't seen one (I haven't seen one outside of the wedding world).
I don't think they're old news... it's just, online they're everywhere! The average wedding guests experience has not included the added extras like candy buffets, damask theme, cupcake towers, etc.
Because we're planning our weddings & we see these ideas everywhere it feels like they're overdone, only they aren't! I say go for it :)
They're not exactly new news (my friend had a candy buffet at her wedding in 2007), but most people think they're great. Who cares! If you like the idea, go for it.
I definitely agree edible is the way to go with favors.
My DOC recently wrote a post about stuff that brides consider "in" or not - see it here!
I think candy buffets may be old news in the blogosphere but in the "real" world, it's still a pretty unique favor. I have never been to a wedding with a candy buffet...and boy do I want to. A LOT of the "trends" that you see on the 'Bee and elsewhere that can seem overused aren't really. The weddings talked about on the 'Bee are spread out all over the world so some of these things may have never been seen in your area. I say go for it.
I've never seen one at a wedding, but I would love it! Go for it:)
In blogs, they're definitely overdone. But your wedding isn't for a blog! Most, if not all, of your guests will have never encountered it. I'm doing it. Who cares!
I don't think they are old news, but I do think they are really expensive. I really want one, but I don't want to spend the money.
My wedding was the first time any of my guests had seen one! I think that they aren't terribly common, even though they are in a lot of magazines and online.
Besides, edible favors are definitely the best and candy buffets make for such great pictures and they just make people happy. I say go for it!
do it! you can still customize it to make it you, and your guests will probably appreciate the trend's long life!
I am with yout - I <3<3<3<3 candy, cake and pepsi too! I think a candy buffet will be great. I'd love to do one, but we're trying to keep costs down since the dinner itself is so expensive. If you do it, please post photos! I'd love to see it!
I haven't been to a wedding with a candy buffet! I know I would love it as a guest because they look so fun and I love the sugar on the dance floor!
OUr wedding was the first time most of our guests had ever seen the candy buffet. I've only been to one other wedding that had a candy buffet. I think it is a fun and nice alternative to having lots of cake. I noticed some people didn't eat cake they went straight for the candy.
for as much as i've seen it on the blogs, I haven't ever seen one in real life! and in the past 2 years i'd have to use my fingers AND toes to count the weddings we've attended. If you're looking to get featured on a blog next year, I'd say skip it and make up a new trend. But if you aren't (what i'm guessing!) rock that buffet - your guests will love it! Chances are they haven't seen one either.
I know they are becoming more common, but I haven't been to a wedding yet that had one. If you like it then do it! Who cares if it's over done, it's your day!
I agree with those who said they're popular on wedding blogs and such, but not so much in real life.
We did a candy buffet at our wedding last September, and no one had ever even heard of the idea. They thought it was so unique.
It's funny - a friend of mine and I were just talking about this - and we've never been to a wedding with a candy buffet and REALLY wish we knew someone who would have one at their wedding soon! I say go for it - if that's what you want, have one! Chances are - nobody's seen one before (Up until two years ago my mother had never been to a wedding where there were cupcakes instead of cake and thought that it was sooo cool).
Seriously love the idea! Am definately planning on having one (in my dreams for now... ::sigh::) Especially because with the BF having 10 nieces and nephews it'll be a hit with them too!!
I think we, as brides, become inudated by online stuff, and don't realize that not too many people at our own weddings spend as much time reading bridal blogs as we do. Yes, a candy buffet is trendy, but many of your guests will have not seen or even heard of them before - it's especially cool if you are a candy-aholic :) I say go for it!
I hope they're not too overdone; I'm really hoping to have one and my wedding isn't for another year and a half (and a couple months, but who's counting). Even if it's not the first time guests have seen it, I think they'll enjoy it--and for some, it might be new news! Another vote in the "go for it!" pile :-)
I think they're old news but I've never seen one done at any weddings I've been to. I love them and I'm going to do one because I think it would be great for the kids (not little kids - we have mostly 8-13 yr. olds). Plus I don't really want to put together favors and I thought it would add some nice color to our reception (I looove my jars - found them at TJMaxx for dirt cheap).
They're definitely not overdone. I go to about 3 or 4 weddings a year and have yet to see ANY of the trends that are talked about in the blogosphere, let alone a candy buffet.
LOL! Thanks for all the feedback. I was a bit worried about it being seeming like old news; been there done that kind of thing, but the majority of my guests wouldn't have seen one of these babies. I have been trying to think of something new and creative to do, but haven't come up with anything yet and I was scared that since my wedding isnt until September 2011 it will seem soooooo old! But on the plus side I've found some candy to tie in with my glam theme like candy cigars and lipstick candy :) I'm also having kids at the wedding so they will be thrilled.
@Bridemegan I think I found my long lost twin! I will definitely post some pictures.
@camrie do you have any pics of the jars you got at TJmaxx and if you don't mind me asking how dirt cheap was dirt cheap :) I was going to order mine online from Save on Crafts.
no. we might see it a lot here online, but i've never actually been to a wedding with a candy buffet or most of the stuff we see here online. I'd love to see any of this stuff in real-life. Go for it!
I think that as wedding blog stalkers, we forget that not everyone knows as much about weddings as we do. Sure, photobooths, candy buffets, and mustaches on sticks have been in a ton of weddings all over the internet, but think about the number of weddings each of your guests has probably been to in the past several years. They have no idea! If you want one, do it!
Candy can't ever go out of style. And a candy smorgisborg(sp?)..who wouldn't love??
I have never even seen a candy buffet. Not ever. It sounds like a dream to me. Go for it!
This may have been a bit ghetto of me, but I found it and wanted to share! I bought a copy of Brides magazine today and found my inspiration for my candy buffet so I took a pisture of it. I agree with everyone here that for the everyday person it's not something they see often so it will be ok to do. So tell me what you think of it :)

I want one soooooooooo bad! I am a huge candy, cake, and pepsi freak and I'm wondering if the whole idea is overdone and if I should just toss it. I've found some interesting candy that I'd like to use as well as some cakes and cookies I want to add to it. This will serve as favors for the guests. I think edible is the way to go. Opinions anyone?
