Hi again ladies!! This is in reference to my other posting regarding large floral centerpieces / arrangements and how to keep the cost down - Can this be Done??? Silk and Real Flowers Combo Together in Centerpieces anyhow I was doing searches on wedding bee and online and saw that by using carnations floral arrangements I would be able to get the exact look that i want plus stay within my budget (SCORE!!!)

well I started searching for actual photos and came across the below photos which I absloutely love but when i went to show my mother.. she told me that carnations are cheap and tacky and if I used them she wouldnt show up and then she hung up on me!!

Umm is it that serious? I thought these were beautiful and I intend to use all white flowers and maybe stick in a few roses here and there (depending on the cost) and my venue has gold candelabras so I figured I would use the flowers with the candelabras but please give me your honest opinion are carnations cheap and tacky? will my weddng be considered cheap and tacky... I may be a little sensitive but my mother really hurt my feelings

Umm, I would be offended too if my mother hung up on me after calling my wedding tacky! That's called being human, not overly sensitive.

Carnations are gorgeous, and they're a great way to have real flowers for less than the cost of roses or peonies. We're going the non-floral route, but if we were, I was definitely considering them. They're gorgeous, don't worry about your mom too much :(.

Carnations are one of my favorite flowers! Plus, for something that will be used for a few hours only, I don't see why it matters...

They may be cheap (as in, not insanely expensive) but they are DEFINITELY not tacky!!  They can be stunning. I agree with kitzy above.

Carnations are the oldest roses in the world.  They are beautiful and they last a long time.  So if you wanted to make your own they can be made in advance.  Carnations can last for 21 days.  I'm using all red ones myself.

Not cheap.  Not tacky.  They are lush and fluffy and beautiful, especially when all bunched together.

Carnations have definitely gotten a bad rap. Your mother's reaction is way over the top and a little crazy. She probably is just unfamiliar with the changing face of weddings. I've seen them all over wedding blogs.

She owes you a big apology, in my opinion.

I LOVE carnations. I wanted a carnation bouquet but my mother insisted that it had to be ivory roses. Since she was paying and the bouquet thing was her idea in the first place, she won. Still pretty, but I think carnations are better.

Carnations are like, huge this year, mostly because of budget but there is a lot you can do with them. You mom should not have said that. I think if they are done well carnations can be gorgeous

Well, I’m not a big flower person, but I love those inspiration pictures you posted.  Just because carnations are less expensive flowers doesn’t mean your wedding will be cheap or tacky.  I think your mom is getting a bit wrapped up in appearances (which I admit is very easy to do when faced by the hype of the wedding industry).  Do what you love and don’t worry about what others think.

Whoa, what a strong reaction!  Had you already shown her your inspiration photos at that point?  Maybe they would change her mind?  I went with "cheap" flowers for everything.  I picked baby's breath for my bouquets.  All the corsages, boutonnieres and the flower girl's bouquet were carnations - at my mom's request!  They're her fave flower.

I would just tell your mom you think they are beautiful and it is what you want.  Is she willing to shell out for you to get more expensive flowers?

I love carnations as well, and I am using them also. I am doing the foam ball look. Where you soak the foam ball in water for like 10 mins, cut the stems on the carnations, and stick them into the foam ball and bunch them together real close. Kinda like this, except my vases are different and the colors will be white and lavendar, because my wedding colors are lavendar, dark brown, and white.
I love them, and think they are really pretty. I worry that since they are starting to show up in popular magazines, like Martha Stewart, that eventually they will go up in price, let's hope not! Haha.

You can't go wrong with carnations! They are a beautiful flower that is cheaper than most and there are so many different ways you can work with them to get the desired outcome. Good Luck!

I think they are "cheap" in that they cost less than the vast majority of other flowers but they are beautiful and not tacky at all!  Don't listen to what your mom is saying at all!

Oh oh oh, these are gorgeous. I was leaning towards using hydrengeas on my pomanders but these carnations are beautiful. I will definitely look into it. I love all the pictures that have been put up.

It also helps that carnations are really hearty flowers.  We used them for our Christmas dinner centerpiece, and they were still beautiful 2 weeks later.

Carnations are fabulous and can look great.  They are sort of "in" right now.  Mums are another one that a different generation might think are the "cheapies," but it is different now!  (I love mums and carnations!)

    @SoontobeMrsA: Amen!

Alright, let me just say this from the get-go: Yes, carnations are inexpensive. But you know what's tacky? Rejecting something because it's inexpensive and/or loving something because it's expensive. FWIW, I think they are beautiful.

And now that we've gotten that out of the way, let me present what I think is the real problem: we are talking about flowers. Decorations. Things that go on the table that no one will really pay attention to (lets be honest!)...And your mother is yelling at you and hanging up on you?? I could understand had you said, "Oh Mom, I've decided that instead of Mass, I'd like to go the Satanic ritual route" or "Oh Mom, please wear this stripper outfit." But her reaction is pretty outrageous. I would bet something else is afoot.

Wait until you both simmer down and then call her up and say, "Choice of flowers aside, Mom, they are just flowers. Is it really worth yelling at me and hanging up on me?"

As someone who formerly LOATHED carnations (until I opened this thread)... I have to say the picture you showed completely changed my opinion.

Plus the other pictures of carnation centerpieces... SO beautiful!

Definitely NOT tacky.  I suggest emailing your mother pictures of what your envisioning.  It will definitely change her mind.

Now, I'm off to google pictures of different colored carnations for my wedding!  Thank you! :)

I'll admit I don't like carnations on their own in cut flower bouquets or loose arrangements. In pomanders and arrangements like you and pp's have posted, I think they look really sharp! They are a cheaper flower dollar-wise, but are a serious bang for your buck, they last a really long time.

My Mom's a florist, she owns her own floral and home decor boutique, and will obviously be doing my flowers. I plan to have quite a mix, but will be including some arrangements like @SoonToBeMrs.Kiss: posted.

Personally, I LOVE carns and I will be using them in my arrangements with Roses. I think they are beautiful, full, and inexpensive.

In your mom's defense, she's obviously from another generation and they for some reason think carns are cheap and tacky...I know a lot of older people who don't like carns -- yup, probably remembering those 80's arrangements.

I say go for it.  Your mom will get over it. It's not her wedding. BUT you can tell her that if she wants to pay for your flowers so you don't have to use carns, then she has the option to do so :)

Carnations are definitely not tacky. Some of the nicest weddings I have been to have had carnations at them. I found a company that sells bulk/wholesale flowers for a really good price. Bunches Direct...have you heard of them? www.bunchesdirect.com

I have to admit I hated carnations before I started looking at flowers for the wedding.  I love the way they look in mass, so lovely!

If I were you, I would show your mom your inspiration photo and not tell her what type of flower if features.  Then when she declares her love for it you can tell her that they are.  That way she can see what you mean without pressure.

I did this to some co-workers with tofu sausage and they were so impressed Wink

I love carnations. I would say that I even like them more than roses maybe.

There's a perception that they are cheap, but I personally don't think so. I think the look of a full carnations bouquets is very romantic and elegant.

Few years ago I bought a big bouquets of carnations for my stepmom's birthday. Because they are a cheaper flower, I was able to get over 30 of them. She got many flowers that day, but my bouquet was the one she liked the most because it was so different, original and pretty.

This is the color of the carnations in my bouquet! Go with what you want, girl! Judging by the pictures you posted, you've got great style & you're mom has no clue what she's talking about!
