yikes, browsing through this board i think i'm paying waaaay too much for flowers! sigh. in any case -- are most of your florists doing mock-ups for you a couple of months out from the wedding?

We're getting mock-ups from our florist.  I wouldn't be comfortable not knowing exactly what everythings going to look like on the wedding day!

As far as cost goes - it really does depend on where you're getting married, and what you're doing for flowers. :)

    We're doing a mock-up too-  i don't know if they're standard though.

In my experience, florists will do mock-ups for higher end weddings.  I've worked at two different retail florists, one in a medium-sized city and one in a big city, and neither did samples for weddings.  Both places relied on word-of-mouth to speak for the quality of their work.  I also have worked at an event production company, and mock-ups are standard, but the budgets are much bigger.

My company specializes in more intimate (i.e. lower budget) weddings, and does not offer mock-ups.  If a client really wants a sample, I offer them if they are willing to pay the expense.  Because I do not have a storefront, I have no other way to recoup the cost of mock-ups.  And because I want to continue to be affordable to my clients, I don't want to be forced to work the cost of mock-ups into my pricing.

    My 2 cents!

I'm actually not sure if mine is doing one.

The price depends a lot on where you are, the type of flowers you chose and how many you got. Did you get out-of-season flowers?

Similar to Miss Casanova, I wouldn't feel comfortable putting down a deposit without knowing what I'm going to be seeing on my wedding day. Of course, things can always change--there could be a sudden shortage of one flower, and they might h ave to replace it with something else, but I definitely want to be able to look at a mostly-decided on representation of my centerpieces/tablescape, etc before the day of the wedding. I don't think I"m being charged extra for the mockup, but as pp said, it might also depend on your location/total floral budget.
