So...I was getting a mani-pedi today in preparation for a friend's wedding today. The lady in the chair next to me heard me request french tips for my mani-pedi, leaned over to her friend and said "French Tips are so out of style." Ouch! It goes without saying that it was not a very nice way to say it but...was she right?
I am not the most up to date on fashion trends but I have loved French tips for years! So does that make them classic or dated? Someone help!
Haha, maybe I'm out of the loop too but I love french tips. I always though they were classic... BUT I live in Idaho so who knows :)
There was a discussion on here not too long ago about this same topic but I can't find it. Apparently they are popular in different parts of the country but not others. Here in Kentucky french tips are very popular and I my self still love them.
But then again KY probably isn't any kind of fashion capital either:)
@derbybride: hey y'all had the southern belles lol!!!
@mrsspitzer: i defintely think it's a regional thing. i don't get french manis because i wear my nails natural and it's just too hard to keep them from chipping. i LOVE opi though and wear the palest pink colors which actually can look like a french or american manicure. my toesies usually match with the pale pink color. however i am very boring lol!!
Well, HECK, I live in New York City, which many might argue to be one of the most fashionable places in the world and I see plenty of people w. french mani's and personally, I love them too! I suppose it also depends on how you get them (eg real nails vs fake nails and round tips vs square) but I don't think they're out of style... In fact, I'm about to get a mani this afternoon for my engagement party this weekend and I'm getting a frenchie...So there ya go!
OMG how rude! Bad manners are always out of style so she should watch her mouth!
I've been getting a french mani every week since I've been 16. I think if done right (i.e. the pink isn't too pinky and the white tips aren't super large and you have shorter nails) it's a classic style. I think it's just the mani's that have long nails it starts bringing back the 90's. Gosh, you all remember that? All the girls at school had to have the long french mani's to be cool?
I definitely still love french manicures! It's what I get almost every time I get my nails done!! I live in TX and they're still VERY popular here.
Wow, that woman has NO TACT! What a snot. Anyway, I love getting french tips as well. I'm in PA and it's not out of style at all.
Eh... who knows? It seems like french tip manicures are neither trendy or tacky from the responses. I personally didn't wear a french tip manicure on my wedding day but I had to argue my manicurist out of it! She was utterly convinced that nobody could be a bride without one.
I personally think that there is a right way to do the french mani, and a wrong way to do it. Although I would never point out my opinion of someone's "wrong" one unless asked haha. IMO, french manicures look great when you keep your nails relatively short (of course, I don't thiink SUPER long nails are ever a good look... but getting a french manicure just highlights that). I also don't like when people get fake nails that are super thick and squared off and the white/pink combo is so blatant... I think that fake nails should strive to look like natural nails. But I know a lot of people like the "fake nail look"
I love french tips and think they are very classy. I didn't do one for my wedding, I wanted more color so I went with a Champaigne color from OPI.
What's out is Dragan Lady nails. But clean well groomed nails, are always in fashion.
I lean towards the "out of style" side, however, it all depends on how they're done.
French manicures IMO, only look "classic" on natural nails. On acrylics, to me, they look cheap, but that's mainly because all the girls (including me) wore french acrylics in high school and now I just associate them with high school girls trying too hard.
I'm wearing fakies with french tips right now, so my vote is no - not outdated.
First of all that girl who said that has no style. Shes outdated if anything. French nails are classic. Classic meaning they never go out of style. And who cares if its on tips or natural nails. They are still classic and beautiful.
They are alive and kicking in Las Vegas and the Phoenix metro area!
In the fashion world, yes they're probably outdated. But none of us are living in that world, so it doesn't matter! I think they can definitely be a classic look if done tastefully, like some other people commented.
I think it's regional. I live in NYC and I don't really see that many people with French manicures. But upstate NY, I see a lot of it. Personally, I don't like them, but if you do, go for it!
I agree with AlliOopsieDaisy - that lady has some serious rudeness issues. Secondly, I think french mani/pedi are SOO classic and could never 'go out of style.' I will have french gel nails for our wedding (I had gels which are like acrylics but more resilent and made of a different material they are just so expensive to take care of all the time). I say do what you want for stuff like that - what makes YOU happy and feel beautiful and go with it. And as for that lady and her... 'comments,' last time I checked she wasn't the fashion police and so she should learn to keep her thoughts to herself (unless of course you were trying to do something crazy like neon colors for a wedding with a classic color scheme, then maybe she should say something lol).
Bella
mouse, I agree that its not really seen on the runways anymore since now the scene is dramatic. However while I agree with hotchildinthecity that it could be regional, I think its also based on your circle of friends. I too live in NYC too and see french nails on the subway every day. And they look a lot better than some of the other nails I have seen on the subways...
@ mouse- it's funny you should say that. That's also probably a big reason why I view frech tips as being outdated. Since I do make-up, i'm constantly bombarded by the fashion industry, way more than your average person. I do make-up for photoshoots, fashion shows, magazines, etc. so what's in and what's out in fashion is in my face everyday. Wow, I never thought of that before!
I'm personally not a fan, just for the maintenance issue. I usually go with a pale pink that looks like a glossy, natural shade -- and that I can touch up from home if needed. However, here in Dallas? I see them eeeeeverywhere! And about half the time, they're really well done and make me want to go out and get and french mani! :) Also, that woman was horribly rude. Bad manners are never in style.
I think they are pretty classic, so they can't really go out of style.
But I don't really like them on me. I love the way a natural, solid color elongates my fingers. I think a soft natural pink is so elegant and subtle.
I'm a simple girl.
I think American manicures look much better in wedding photos. Have you tried that? It is a more natural/muted version of the French manicure...plus, as it chips off, it is much less noticeable if you are busy like me!
You should have told her her sweater made her look fat =]
I still rock a french manicure, but it's love/hate. I also love super dark nails and red ones and the natural ones, it's really whatever. I like them b/c i feel like when i keep them short (no talons please) they're classic. But if they look like crap, yeah, they look tacky! Upkeep is key, but honestly, an appointment every 2-3 weeks for 45 minutes is less time than when I paint them myself!
So right now i have white french acrylics (i'm doing an American tomorrow when i get my fill) and then my toes have this super dark (almost black) dark purpley red on them.
I love them-I've only had them done once for a friend's wedding-and that was on my nails-not acrylic. I don't have those super long weird nails anyways-so I think it looked fine for a wedding. Her & her now SILs got them too.
I ONLY wear french manis and pedis. My great-grandmother thought women who wore color on their hands were "loose" so I got into the habit of never wearing color on my hands...no offense to those that do.
I have a thin acrylic overlay over my natural nails b/c when I used to get my natural nails done in "french"..they would be chipped by the end of the day. The acrylic overlay gives me the strength of fake nails w/o the thickness and I don't have to worry about the color chipping off.
I wear my nails relatively short. I prefer my nails squared rather than round b/c I have chubby hands with wide nail beds and rounded just looks weird. My mom wears hers rounded b/c she has small, thin fingers.
If you get them, make sure that the length and shape of the nails matches your hand type.
@JamaicaBride, HAHAHA. I've met women who say the same stigma is there about red lipstick too. That's just too funny! =]
I still see them quite a bit, but think they look best on natural nails....none of that long business for me! (it also reminds me of highschool dances) I think if it's done tastefully they look good. But, I do hate how they chip and am not a fan if the white is too bright.
@ejs4y8...it's weird how that stuff still influences me. She also had an issue with women leaving the house without earrings. So you guessed it....I always wear earrings when I leave the house...even if I am only going to the store on the corner...LOL!
In terms of current fashion trends, it is more "in style" to wear shorter natural nails in a squoval shape with a solid color polish. For a while, eggplant was the "it" color polish, I'm not sure what it is now. The celebrities on magazines all have short, natural nails.
Having said that, like mouse pointed out, we aren't models! I don't think it necessarily has to look dated or out of style to have a French manicure, though I do agree with those of you who say its not as attractive on very fake looking acrylics. On shorter nails, with a more natural look (not stark pink and white), I think its a very pretty classic look -- one I plan on wearing on my wedding day!
Um, I think she's crazy, they're classic! I'll be the first to say that there are edgier looks that I love to wear, but usually those edgy, fashion forward looks aren't appropriate for things like a job interview or a swanky party or whatever. Like, I am rocking deep red (think Sangria) OPI nail polish right now... but I wouldn't wear that to a job interview unless it was a job that allowed for more creativity. Even then, I tend to stick to classic.
And for things like rehearsal dinner, wedding, etc, there are classics besides the French manicure (pretty pinks and peaches, etc) but I think the French is still the go-to classic.
I now have my natural nails and keep them barely past the tip of the finger. Squared with sides rounded and I use now a darker red color by OPI on them. I also do wear a french too..but get a sealed uv coat on top when I do b/c it will chip alot.
I knew I could count on the bees!
Thanks for all your input...I really appreciate it and I learned a lot! I had never heard of an American manicure (still sort of out of it with the fashion!) but I Googled it and they're awesome.
I can see how French manicures are not at the cutting edge of the fashion world which totally makes sense. It also makes me feel SO much better to know that it seems like French mani-pedis are still considered classic by most people!
I know it might seem lame but I was really bummed out that I might have just indulged in an outdated mani-pedi for my friend's wedding. You all have been too sweet and put my mind to ease. I can still get my beloved French tips. This is why I love the hive. ;)
And yeah...wasn't that lady so rude? The more I think about it, the more I want to kick the water from the spa chair in her face. Booooo.
Anyway, thanks again for all your feedback. You're the best!!
I think French mani on natural nails are okay, but french on really long tips isn't something i go for anymore...(it reminds me of Britney Spears who hasn't changed her looks since 2001) I think short nails with color are more stylish.
To me, they are classic, especially when on a bride. I have to say, though, I prefer the look more on natural nails. I'm getting my nails done after work today, and I'm getting French on my toes, lol.
So upon reading what an American Manicure is, I've realized this is what my salon gives anyone who asks for a French manicure! LOL! I've always loved it though.
They aren't my style, especially on fake nails (I think fak nails in general are icky) but that's not what matters.
All that matters is whether or not you like them. Who cares what some lady at the mani/pedi place thinks!
French Tips are as classic as pearls and a pair of jeans. Furthermore, if you like it, thats all that matters. Theres a saying I like to go by: Great minds talk about ideas, Average minds talk about events, and Small minds talk about people. Wear those frenchies proud! :)
Ejs and Jamaica: My dad always said the same thing about women and ankle bracelets, so I have *never* worn an anklet! :P Funny how things just stick with you.
