I have seen halo/pave settings really pop up in the last few years. Not that I am a ring expert or anything, but I've never seen them until very recently. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't have feelings either way towards them I don't love nor hate them. I am not trying to stir trouble, just looking for people's opinions and conversation :)

But --- do you think they are a "trend" and will look outdated in 20 years and be a thing of "the 2000ish decade"?

I see a lot of the yellow gold marquise settings with large, swirling sidestones on people that have been married now for 10-20 years and to me, that screams 80's-90's.

    Thoughts?

@Ms. Meowerson: Oh yes, I have definitely seen some stunners! What promted this question is I saw a woman at Subway that had one (and it was beautiful).. and realized the last THREE people I know that have gotten engaged have gotten halo settings!

@gocubbies:that's funny- cos the last three girlfriends of mine to get married have all had variations of the same ring too- not halo though- princess solitaire with diamonds half way around the band.

Yeah, now that you mentioned the 80's looking rings and I could totally picture it I'm sure that the halo setting will look very early 2000's eventually.  That doesn't take away from either of their beauty, but I'm sure they will look dated someday.  Just like the wedding dress styles that everyone seems to have now, the tight to the thighs and then ruffles or whatever will look very dated someday.  I know the puffy sleeves I had in 97 look super 90's, lol!

@Ms. Meowerson: Weird!!! To each their own! It does make me wonder..... was it the guy that picked the halo or was it the girl?? That's another point to consider for sure.

    YAY JELLIES!

I think it's really popular right now, but I doubt it will be as dated as the 80s rings.

Halo rings are in style, but I wouldn't say "trendy" in a negative sense.  They are actually a classic antique, vintage style.

I didn't even realize until you said something, but I have seen a lot of halo rings lately!

Its also a good point about looking back and noticing things are dated. I'm doing my best to keep things for my wedding timeless rather than trendy but I'm giving in and wearing a giant flower in my hair with my veil.. I need something young and trendy to laugh about when I look at my pictures in 20 years :)

@cbee: I do get a little google-eyed over the vintage style. I think they are gorgeous. I am a huge lover of anything vintage, old, rustic, classic. (I think I was born in the wronge decade for sure). I have really gone back and forth between a really vintage style ring and a more simple round stone with round side stones... I don't have the ring yet, but we'll see what I get ;)

@kingytobe: I am doing the flower too! But I definitely agree I am trying to make my wedding timeless as well. I really, really hope it is. I figure if I make it something I am passionate about and I want the "style" to linger for years because it's just "us", it will be a-ok :)

@gocubbies: I couldnt agree more! I want my ring to look more like an estate ring (antique, vintage gemstone) mostly because I actually want it to be antique thats passed down in my family :)

@Bellanouva: That's so awesome :) I can only hope mine becomes a "family stone". We've decided on a moissanite and from what I know it'll hold up through the years. I WISH I had a family stone my SO could give to me.. but maybe it's up to us to start that tradition :)

@gocubbies: This post got me interested in vintage engagement rings...what styles have come and gone and returned.  Here's a description of engagement rings of past eras I found on one site.  This was fun.

    • Edwardian: During the Edwardian era from 1901 to 1915, engagement rings featured platinum and white gold bands with filigree and scrollwork details. Old Mine Cut diamond, princess cut and emerald cut center stones were used in solitaire, three-stone or multiple stone arrangements. Amethysts and pearls were often used as complimentary stones.
    • Art Deco: The Art Deco fashion period covered the roaring 1920's and jewelry captured the spirit of this bold age. Geometric shapes, the use of contrasting materials, large colorful cluster settings and mixing gemstones with diamonds in ring designs were popular. Many engagement rings featured cushion cut, emerald cut and Asscher cut diamonds. Rings emerged that used diamond baguettes.
    • Retro Modern: Retro Modern fashions of 1940s and 1950s dealt with silver screen glamour and engagement rings from this time period captured this feel. Rings of yellow gold and rose gold with large emerald cut center stones set with accessory stones that often formed patterns such as flowers or geometric shapes. Three stone or multistone accessory arrangements were popular, and side trilliants were among the style choices.
    • 1960s: The 1960s engagement rings included three-stone diamond rings during the early sixties, oval or marquise diamond solitaires in the mid-sixties and cluster settings of diamonds with gemstones in the late sixties.
    • 1970s thru 1990s: Cluster settings were very popular in the 1970s thru 1980s for engagement rings. Dramatic, elaborate arrangements were common in the 1970s. In the 1980s, large center stone diamonds circled by smaller accessory stones were common ring designs. Wedding sets of matching engagement rings and wedding bands were also popular in the 1980s. The diamond solitaire returned to popularity in the 1990s and still remains the most popular engagement ring choice today.
    • 2000s: Today the diamond solitaire, the three-stone ring, channel settings and pave settings are very popular. The round brilliant cut in a prong setting is still a favorite. A variety of metals are available from yellow gold to titanium, with platinum and white gold becoming more common. Asscher cuts, princess cuts, emerald cuts and pear-shaped diamonds are very sought after.

I think that halos are really popular right now, for good reason! So pretty! I know when my time comes I will be getting a blue sapphire in a halo setting, either round or oval.

But I don't think halos are trendy in a bad way. There are somethings that are stylish throughout the decades, think of the popularity of the LBD since the days of Breakfast at Tiffany's. That was some time ago, but when people dress like Audrey did in that era we think they are stylish even today.

I agree, when I think trendy, I don't necessarily think its bad.. I think its 'telling of the time from which it came'

@gocubbies: aww thank you! My SO has a ring from his grandfather and father that has been passed down generations of males in the family, so I would like mine to be passed down among the girls :) I love the idea of something like a family hierloom passing down generation to generation- just linking everyone. I really want to have that kind of meaning in my engagment ring. Indeed its a great tradition to start!

@sonomagal: You got me! Im getting probably an Edwardian solitare (thus the gemstone and size) Im in LOVE with European old styles in rings (the crown setting anyone)

What an incredibly informative post btw! :D

I totally agree that the halo settings of today will definitely date back to this time period-- they're by definition trendy, without a doubt! You always hear them referred to as being a "vintage" look, but really, they were never as popular as they are now, and were done completely differently back when they first came into style, around the Victorian era. I actually spend quite a bit of time browsing through ebay for vintage jewelry as well as several antique jewelry sites and I would say that I rarely come across an actual antique or vintage halo setting.

I used to really dislike halos, but I have since seen some that I really love, and I think someday I will at least have a colored stone in a halo, if not another diamond. It's a great way to add the appearance of size! This is my favorite one right now:

FWIW, I had one on my favorite professors in mursing school show me her engagement ring. It was a yellow goldsetting, oval sapphire, and a halo of diamonds! I was very similar to (if smaller than) the Princess Di/ Kate Middleton ring. She's been married for much longer than that ring has been famous.

Another nursing professor has a white gold princess cut diamond ring with a black diamond put on either side as an accent. (She showed me once when I was at the hospital and she caught a glimpse of mine)

Its very trendy, as were other styles in other decades. Everything will change but keeps coming back go something stylish decades ago. It will eventually go out of style, but it wont stay out of style forever.

I JUST saw a marquise in yellow gold with swirly bits today! And yes, it was on someone who would have been married 10ish years ago.

I don't see a lot of halo rings--even with women my age, it's much more common to see a solitaire or a family ring, or no e-ring at all. With women who would have married 10, 20 years ago, the solitaire or a solitaire with ring guards are the most common.

And I agree, trendy doesn't necessarily mean bad.

I think halo rings are very "in style" right now.  I am not going to say "trendy" because I think that word can have a negative connotation, and I don't think the stylishness of halo rings is bad.  A few years ago, everyone had a round or princess-cut solitaire, so these things definitely go through phases.

The last 6 people I know that have gotten engaged have almost identical rings.

Halos are gorgeous (I don't have one, but I know that is what my husband would have picked - he loves halos! - if he had not proposed with a family heirloom), but I think people will definitely look at halos in 20 years and say, "oh, you got engaged in 2009/2010/2011!"

Though it is popular, I wouldn't say trendy.  To me, trendy implies that it has never been popular before, which just isn't the case; as pps have stated, halos are actually a reworking of a Victorian style of rings.

Back in the day when I thought I was going to marry my college boyfriend I wanted a halo ring, fast forward to today I have a solitaire but have picked out a new halo setting because I still love them. That tells me that even if it's trendy, I don't care because it's what I love.

I think "trendy" means whatever is recently popular (whether or not it used to be popular decades ago). So yep, I'd say they're trendy. Just like white gold and pave diamonds are. I don't see the point in trying to get something timeless because unless you have a round brilliant diamond on a plain platinum band, I think you're going to be able to pinpoint around what decade a ring was made in. I think that the pave set diamonds in my band will prob peg my ring as one of the 2000's rings, and I'm cool with it :)

@CorgiTales: I agree with you.  There is no point in trying to get something timeless, because unless you're going to get a round brilliant set in platinum (which isn't my cup of tea), it might look dated at some point.  But it is your wedding and e-rings, that you will (in theory) wear forever, it's not like a piece of clothing that you won't wear next season because it won't be in style anymore.  Trends are going to come and go so I think as long as you don't go too crazy-different, it will stand the test of time.  I personally really like halos and yea they probably are trendy, but who cares?
