Hey Miss Albany! I'm getting married in Grafton in July and am originally from Ballston Spa. How about you?
Hi! It's great to see the capital district board called out seperately from the other CNY board! I'm getting married in Waterford, NY with a reception in Troy in August. I live in Chicago now, so I'm planning from OOT and would love to hear advice from others on here.
I'm getting married June 14 in Silver Bay (on Lake George). Not technically Capital Region but I grew up outside Albany and many of my vendors are Albany based. Hello all!
Turtle .... our wedding is in Troy in November at Franklin Plaza! I live in Troy so let me know if you need any OOT help!
Hey turtle, I'm planning our wedding from New York City, so I am familar with your pain (although you're even further).
For our reception we're playing it pretty low-key on Babcock Lake New York with a BBQ, swimming, basketball, and horseshoes. Our caterer is Olde Daley Inn, anyone ever had their food? I was kinda bummed that we didn't get to taste any of it beforehand.
I love our photographer, in case anyone is looking for one. Louis Torres from "Forever Platinum". Here's his blog: http://louistorres.blogspot.com
Hey Kimberlee, I'm a Franklin Plaza bride also!! So far they have been just awesome.
Pattyb, I haven't had Olde Daley Inn's food in quite a few years-- but if it's as good as it used to be, you'll be very pleased!
hey hey-
i'm planning my albany area wedding from massachusetts. our ceremony is at christ the king in guilderland, reception is at the edison club in rexford.
looks like this board will be a good thing!
Hi all!
I grew up in Saratoga Springs but because summer weddings there are rather cost-prohibitive, we're getting married in July 2009 at Birch Hill in Schodack. I'm also doing the OOT thing--I live in Connecticut.
Hi All!
My wedding is in August at The Pruyn House in Latham (barn in the back). Less than three months to go and still a LOT to do! Looking forward to ideas-suggestions. Wish we had this board 3 or 4 months ago!
I'm so excited that there are other readers from this area! My wedding (both the ceremony and reception) is in October at the Stockade Inn in Schenectady, and I'm originally from East Greenbush.
PattyB, I work downtown and in the summer time various food vendors bring their carts around and everyone eats outside. Old Daley Inn (my FI has taken to calling it ODI for short) is delicious--everyone's favorite, and they always have the longest lines. I really think you'll enjoy them.
Hey everyone! I will be getting married in Sept. at the Shaker Ridge Country Club. The ceremony will be in Troy. Does anyone have a good/reasonably priced videographer? How about any ideas for the rehearsal dinner for about 30-40 people?
Hi Ladies! I'm so glad to see a Capital Region board too and that there are so many of us! I grew up in Clifton Park and I'm getting married at the Hall of Springs in Saratoga in August. I did a ton of research on vendors in the area, so I'm happy to share my thoughts with anyone. Kaytee- Wedding Combo has great quality video equipment, experienced videographers (at least Sonja, who I requested), and spends a lot of hours editing. Their website is http://www.weddingcombo.com/. For a rehearsal dinner in Troy, I have been to one at Lo Porto's, which has good Italian food and good service, but it was closer to 20 people. Tosca is another restaurant in Troy that is consistently been rated high and I've heard the food is great, so you might want to give that a try.
HI everyone,
I grew up in Albany, but live in Boston now. I'm getting married on 10/11 in Albany though. The ceremony is at St. Mary's Church in downtown Albany, and the reception is at Wolferts Roost Country Club.
I'm very excited to talk to you ladies about what your plans are for your weddings.
Kaytee -
I second LaPortos for a rehearsal dinner, I think its probably the best itailen food around.
There's also Holmes and Watsons in Troy. Its more of an english pub. You can rent out the entire upstairs room, I bet you could fit 40 people comfortably. They give you your own bar with kegs. It would be a great place if your looking for a more laid back setting, and I'm sure it would be affordable.
Turtle - I figured you were using Franklin Plaza, I didn't think there was really any other place in Troy. They've been really great for us too! They recommend really terrific vendors, our photographer and dj/ piano man are awesome.
Kaytee- we're having our rehersal dinner in Troy at the Potter's Tavern, right off of Rt. 7. Here's the link: http://www.sterupsquare.com/tavern.html
We're having about 20 people, so I don't think they'd have any problem with 30-40. We've eaten lunch there a number of times and have enjoyed their food.
Elizziebeth--we're date twins! I don't know if it's the combination of things being busy at work and being busy wedding planning but it has felt like the wedding planning stuff has been insane recently--almost overwhelming. Are you feeling the same way?
I've felt the crunch lately, I'll admit. I think it's because theres only so much you can do at a time, and it's a lot of hurry up and wait. Like theres only so much you can do at the one year mark, and then its a couple of little things until you hit the 8 month mark and it explodes and then little things until 6 mos out, and so on.
Planning from far away has been a little difficult as well, but basically within a month of getting engaged we had all of our vendors (ceremony, reception, florist, cakemaker, musicians, dj, and my dress, as well as the girls dress) picked out. So it was August/September that was very busy. Then a busy weekend in January and then another busy one Mothers day weekend. My shower is at the end of next month and I'll be doing a boatload of stuff that weekend too. I'm just excited for it all to be over with, I'm really at bridal burnout right now.
Thank you for all of the great ideas for my rehearsal dinner ladies! Your advice is much appreciated!
Turtle & Kimberlee - I'm having my reception at the Franklin Plaza at the end of September as well! When are your dates? I'm always interested in picking the brain of another Franklin bride!! GL!
JuleB - November 1st, I can't wait!
What are you colors? What do you plan on for decor. I keep jumping around. I think we are going to go with ivory and white as the main colors with black where needed, for text, attire. I just think the interior is so nice I don't want to throw a random color in there. Anyways I would love to know how your decorating the space.
I'm August 9th...coming up so soon!! for colors, my bm's are wearing chocolate brown, so I'm using chocolate brown and ivory as our main color scheme, with some bursts of pink for flowers etc. I also didn't want to overwhelm the space with a lot of other colors, so I'm trying to take some cues from the pink of the walls and find colors that complement them.
The space is so pretty on its own, I don't think it needs much enhancing-- what ideas have you two have?
Kimbeerlee & Turtle!
My wedding is Sept 26th and my main colors are espresso and ivory (not very creative i know!). I still need an accent color and think I'm going to go with lime type green or similiar. I love the pink idea but for more of a fall color I think maybe green is more appropriate for me. The BM dresses are Ann Taylor Audrey dresses so they are espresso with about 2" of champagne peeking out at the bottom and a champagne sash.
Decor has been tough for me along with finalizing flowers! Now I'm thinking of doing curly willow and white orchid centerpieces with hanging votives on half tables and then maybe just pillar candles with floating orchids on the other half. Email me if you want my inspiration pics (julieann727 at yahoo dot com). Other than that I don't know what else. I plan on renting chocolate colored table overlays and using ivory chair covers with espresso sashes. I really want chivari chairs but have to see how the budget works out as we get closer - they are an additional $5.50 each more than the chair covers.
I was told from another bride that they provided her a larger placecard centerpiece along with small ones for the cocktail tables. I have yet to be told that by the FP myself but she ensured it's typical for all brides. I hope so! What meals did you choose Turtle? I have to finalize meals asap so I can get invites out but it's so hard because they don't do tastings! It's driving me crazy!!
Sorry this is so long but I love hearing from other FP brides. P.S. Are you two on the upstate NY board on the knot at all?
Another Franklin Plaza bride here. I am having the ceremony and the reception there. I have New York Players as my band, Thomas-Gates as my videographer, and Pesha my florist.
The wedding is in Mid-August.
I am currently looking for a reasonably-priced caterer to do the rehearsal dinner at home. Also, looking for an outdoor photo-op area to do pictures beforehand, during the day.
For entrees at Franklin Plaza, I think I am doing:
-Filet mignon with chianti reduction sauce
-chicken piccata
-seared salmon with mango salsa
What about you other FP brides??
Hey Riss!
Joe at FP recommended:
Filet mignon (sauce to determined later)
Cedar Salmon
Chicken Piccata
So those are probably the ones we'll go with. Chicken Piccata or Chicken Marsala. Neither FI or I will probably choose the chicken entree so not sure which one to pick.
we're doing the filet, chicken piccatta and salmon en croute for our entrees. I went mainly with Joe's recommendations. Riss, We're having the NY Players also! I'm really excited about them. Also, in another thread on this board, some folks recommended outdoor photo spots to me-- you should check it out.
Are any of you doing any fun detail things-- ie. tablecards, placecards, etc? We're using their candelabras so the centerpieces should be pretty standard.
Hey Franklin Plaza Brides!! We're gowing in numbers on here pretty soon we will get our own board!
I love the idea of expresso and ivory but there is no way my groom will wear brown so thats why I'm using black. (and we are later in the year) I tried to incorporate some pink but then I found myself picking out everything in pink and I didn't think I could do that to Trevor.
Your menus sound awesome.... my FI knows a bunch of the people that work there and hes tried the fillet and salmon before.. he said the salmon was the best he has ever had and that says a lot becasue he's a cook. Do you all do a taste testing? I was kind of surprised that no has called since February.
Ohh and do any of you know about centerpeices for the cocktail room. I totally forgot that that could be another 5-10 peices. Someone said something about them supplying you the arangments?
And one last thing, we got Lee Waddell as a pianoist for the cocktail hour and DJ.. he is awesome and so far I would really recommend him. We are also using Susanne Kowala of Play of Light in Latham, her pictures are amazing!
Yaaay go Franklin Plaza
I will also be using the candleabras -I think they are very beautiful! As for centerpieces in the cocktail room, we weren't planning on doing much. They have a lot of dried flowers in the room already and the room is really pretty to start with, so I don't think you need much. Maybe you could just do something very small on the tables.
Turtle- that's great you have ny players. I have been to a wedding with them and it was really great. They get everybody up and dancing all night long!
It's too bad they don't have food tastings, because I would love to try their food! Has anyone chosen anything other than the entrees yets?
Hi All!
My DJ Rick Angerami plays the piano as well so he's going to play during cocktail hour. I think I'm most worried about the DJ even though FP recommended him. I don't want our dance floor empty all night! Even though my mind has changed a million times lately I don't think I'm using the candelabras. I'm going to have dendrobium white orchid and curly willow tall centerpieces in tall cylinder vases. My florist has said she'll throw in the vase rental for free which helps. I'm using espresso but having the guys still in black tuxes - I personally don't like the brown ones and think the brown dresses still look nice against classic black tuxes. I'm so jealous of you girls having a band!!
Are you girls local to the Troy area? I'm not - my FI grew up north of there a few towns over.. I'm a little concerned with how the area looks to my OOT guests....hehe ridiculous I know. I over think everything! I know alot of places in Troy are old industrial and run down. Oh well...it's just one night.
Where you gals getting married?
Hey JuleB,
The orchids will be awesome.
We're doing brown dresses with black tuxes also. What color flowers are your girls carrying?
I'm originally from the area-- grew up in Clifton Park and went to high school in north Troy. But I live in Chicago now. THe FI is from Iowa, and so we're going to have a lot of guests from outside the area. Honestly, although I know Troy isn't always picture-perfect, it's really looking much better downtown than it was about 10 years ago. The streets around teh FP, near the Troy Music Hall, Tosca's etc. are chock full of beautiful old buildings. I think you're guests will see more of that and less of the parts of troy that you're thinking of.
We're getting married at St. Mary's in Waterford. You? Where are you having your rehearsal dinner?
Wow, so many Albany Brides to be! I don't feel so alone! :) My wedding isn't until March 09, and my fiance and I actually looked at FP, but felt like we could not customize the menu as we wanted to (we're Italian and Taiwanese... so fusion was on our plate!) So instead, we went with a very budget friendly and very customizable and very reputable Classe Catering in Albany for food and Appel Inn in Altamont for our reception. But we definitely loved Franklin Plaza though... and would've really loved to have it there.
Hey I just saw this and was wondering if there are any new brides in the area?! I'm getting married in September at the Hall of Springs!
