I am not sure by what you mean by modern? sleek and sophisticated? youthful? tasteful?
I would use satin...I don't think anyone will really care about the poly/satin difference.
Meaning do they look a little cheesy?
I'm afraid with my polyester tablecloths that tulle chair sashes will look cheesy because they don't necessarily coordinate.
I could do tulle sashes for cheaper than satin.
Maybe I should consider organza?
I think maybe organza our satin. Tulle has a tendency (not always) to look not as nice.
Yeah I think tulle might be weird looking but I haven't seen any pics.
I had trouble voting in the poll because of the double negative, so I voted "yes" to mean I don't think they look modern. Mostly though, I think any and all tulle looks like the late 80s and early 90s, so that may just be me. I've never actually seen tulle chair sashes.
Tulle is not really modern looking IMO - but that might be because my MIL went overboard with it....
Yeah...I definitely don't think of tulle as modern looking, but maybe you could make it work. I'm not, however, a big fan of chair covers and sashes in general (just my personal style).
I mostly see either satin or organza chair sashes but not really tulle. So maybe you are referring to the organza ones? I also am not a huge fan of chair cover n sash combo.. but i may be forced to use self-tie chair covers since my venue has the ugliest chairs on the planet
We were supposed to have satin sashes, but there was a spill that soaked some of them during set up. So, they used organza ones instead. I don't think they look cheesy at all. Best Wishes!
I don't know if I have ever seen tulle chair sashes. I think organza or satin would look nice.
I won't be using chair covers. I'll have white wooden chairs around the tables. I was just trying to dress the chairs up a bit, but maybe I shouldn't add anything.
Melisslp's sashes look really nice.
@YSQueen: Yeah I don't think you'll really need anything then. I also had natural wooden chairs and I didn't use anything extra.
If anything i feel the opposite...satin..is ummmm.satin!!! I find thats more 80's looking...and shiny!! Tulle gives the apperance of colour but doesntmake the sashes stand out as much, which i think is nice!
I don't like chair covers or sashes. We are having white garden chairs for our outdoor ceremony and reception. Less is more IMO
I had something similar to melisslp, but they didn't tie in bows, just a weird knot thing.
My mom and I had a big fight over the chairs -- she thought garden chairs would make the old people die :) So this was the compromise. Didn't look terrible!
I think your best bet to make them "modern looking" is to do something simple with them like this:

or this if you can't do it the other way:

If you want to go modern, neither chair covers nor sashes of any material strike me as "modern." Generally "modern" is more clean and sleek without a lot of ornamentation and frill. If you wanted to do really modern, ghost chairs or breuer cane chairs or even vienna bentwood chairs are more that speed.
That doesn't mean chair covers are "cheesy" though--they can be contemporary and pretty and quite romantic. And they don't necessarily look dated to me--you can change the look of them simply by the way you tie them. A big taffeta bow is a little on the 80s side, but perhaps if you did a knot with longer tails, it would update the look a little.
Sorry but could you please clarify the poll question... I think you are going to get the wrong results because it's a double negative i.e. do you mean "Yes-they aren't modern looking" or "Yes-they are modern looking".
Personally I don't mind tulle chair sashes but they definitely are starting to look a bit dated so i wouldn't call them modern...
@MrsT2b: Meaning "Yes, they aren't modern looking"
I think based on it, I may just not put anything on the chairs.
I don't think they're modern looking, but I don't think they're cheesy either. I kind of don't like chair covers in general because I find they're too slippy, and my legs always got caught in them, but they looked right for our garden wedding, and the chairs there were really terrible.
I thought that satin looked a little more solid, while tulle/organza provided just a hint of colour. It totally depends on the look you're going for.
Here's a pic of my venue with satin ones.
Hi YS Queen. What you see in the photos others have posted is organza, not tulle. Organza is still commonly used, so I don't think it's the fabric choice that will make your design look dated. One element won't make your wedding look dated; it's deteremined by how all the design/decor elements you have chosen blend together that will make your break your look.
I would, however, recommend tying the chair sash in a simple knot or unique design (as the pink/wooden chair photo shows - we've used that design and it's stunning) and avoid the bow at all costs - bows are really dated.
Will you have any color on the table? If you're having an all white table, then your chair sashes might stand out too much, but if you're bringing a runner or color within your centerpiece, the sashes won't be too overpowering. All things to consider when considering your vision.
As far as cost goes, try your local rental company or event planner because renting the sashes will probably end up costing the same as purchasing them. And, they will probably get you a discount on the white chairs you are renting which will make up for the rental costs.
For instance, we rent our organza sashes for just $0.50ea and our satin for $0.75 (narrow) and $1 (wide). www.affair-remember.com
Hope this helps. Best of luck in your search!
I am not a fan on any chair sash being tied in a bow, but I think if you get organza or satin and use one of the other tying examples posted above, it will look great.
I think tulle is coming back in a big way. Lots of ballerina styles out there now. Maybe you can style it differently than a bow or poof?

I'm considering purchasing some rolls of tulle and DIYing my chair sashes but I'm a little concerned that tulle chair sashes looks a little 80s.
Do you think tulle chair sashes aren't modern looking? My tablecloths are polyester so I don't really want to use satin chair sashes, although organza is also an option.
Are there any other options besides tulle, satin, and organza?
