I think people tend to buy dresses around 6 months before their wedding. Most weddings occur during the summer so I think early in the year is when lots of people buy dresses. It’s also around this time that the new styles come out. It’s hard to say when dresses go on sale because the dresses are pretty much made to order, unless you happen to fit into something that’s right off the rack. You can keep an eye out for sample sales if you want to go that route. Filene’s Running of the Brides is a huge event. Check for a local one near you.

Buying online is usually much cheaper. You can try browsing on http://dressnelly.com ,for example. The hard part is that you don’t get to try it on beforehand. It’s not a big deal in my mind though, because everyone gets their dresses altered. Lots of brides think they’ll be able to lose weight so the final fitting is usually around a month or two before the wedding. Just give yourself plenty of time.

David’s Bridal runs “sales” all the time.

There are trunk shows throughout the year. You usually get a discount and “freebies” such as hollow-to-hem and other customization.  You can find out when these are by looking at either the manufacturer or the shop’s websites.  Because a lot of people get engaged at Christmas/Valentine’s day, February and March are really heavy months for these events, although you can find them all year.

Bridal shops probably have a rack of sample dresses that are sold at a discount.  They may have a sale once or twice a year to help sell these quicker.

Not necessarily a sale, but there is also the used dress websites.  Ebay, recycledbride, bravobride, scarletscloset, oncewed, preownedweddingdresses, yourdreamdress, etc.  There are many dresses on these sites that have never been worn.

As Darcy noted, give yourself at least 6 months and don’t buy too far in advance of that.

Alterations depend on the individual.  Most people need them, at least a hem.  If you are on the taller side or order a hem-to-hollow measurement, you may not require any.  Wedding dresses are made to order but still to the manufacturer’s size chart, not to your custom size.
