Ehh we're not having one - the main wedding cake is going to be expensive enough as it is lol Plus, he loves any kind of cake possible so he didn't feel the need to get anything specifically for him

Sadly, no! They aren't common around here at all & we have a small guest list, so we have no need for extra cake (did I just say that? There's always need for cake.) I am seriously thinking about doing a "grooms cake" for the rehearsal dinner :)

I think this is a very regional thing.  I hadn't even heard of a groom's cake until I moved to the south.

We're having groom's pie!  My FI wanted something of his own, so when I mentioned groom's cake in passing, he was ALL about it.  However, he doesn't like doing the same thing as everyone else, so he has decided to get a bunch of pies.  Took me a while to talk him out of making them himself since he's in med school and I really was pretty sure he wouldn't have the time for that.  But he's pretty stoked about it!  (And pies are not all that expensive.)

@danielle: Do you live in Newburgh?? My FI lives just south of you in KY (I'll be moving there once my visa gets approved!) We always watch movies in Newburgh b/c the Owensboro one is filled w/ punks & cops. :)

Not only are we having an LSU Tigers groom's cake, but I'm surprising FI with a pharmacy cake at our dinner reception to celebrate his graduation the next weekend.  I have a soft spot for cake!

RecessionistaBride-hey! I do live in Newburgh, IN :D

When are you moving? Newburgh is nice...not too many punks around here...hehe

I really love it here; a great place to raise a family. :D

I hope you will enjoy your new home!

its a southern thing - so if you dont want to have it, outside of the south its not really expected.

we are having one because its tradition! :) but we might buck tradition and have it at the rehearsal dinner instead of at the reception *gasp*

I really want to because a) I wanted to make it in a 3D Sculpture Cake of our NFL Team throwback helmet. FI is a HUGE fan!!! We have had season tickets for the past 3 years and rain, shine, snowstorm (no joke!) we are there!

But I also thought to use that as the egg & nut free cake for my nephews. It is proving difficult to find a bakery that can do both of that for a reasonable price. Ones that I find can do a regular cake like that the quality isn't that great. So then is it worth it?

And. FI's not even a sweets fan! I just thought he would get a kick out of having a cake in the shape of a throwback helmet and I was going to play the teams theme song when they brought it out and everything. :(

So, we'll have to see. I'm still exploring.

I'm surprising FI with one. He knows now that he's getting one, but not what it will look like or anything. In the area I live in, it's not traditional and I've never actually seen one at a wedding that I've attended, but I know it's traditional in the south and not really all that modern.

It's not something that's usually done here, plus my fiance (and myself) is definitely opposed. We don't really like the idea that it represents, that the wedding cake is the "bride's cake." We both love cake and we are both having input on the flavor and design.

Nope, our main cake is going to be beig enough.  Also, grooms cakes aren't that common around these parts.

Negative! Mr. KM actually told me outright he didn't want one! We're having some cake, but alot of pie and he has requested a strawberry rhubarb one from the place we're getting all of them, though!

We are! My FH is from the south so that's something that's relatively normal around here! But i'm from the west coast so I hadn't really heard of that before (unless you can count Steel Magnolias!)

I initially didn't want but then did want one. In the end, I decided against it. I am glad we didn't because we already had a ton of cake left over from the main cake. It would have been a waste of our money.

I say if you want it and you can afford it, then go for it. Just make sure that both cakes serves the crowd so you don't have too much left over. It is a cute idea though!

Nope, we are doing a main cake, and probably a couple cheese cakes.. just for variation, plus we are more "cheesecake" people than "cake" people...

Yes, but it's definitely a regional thing.  I'm from the South, but I have a lot of family in Boston and they were like "whyyy do you need two cakes?"

I had never heard of one either until I watched "Steel Magnolias" lol, but apparently I get a free one if we order our cake through the venue's baker (which happens to have the best cakes we tasted anyway)...my problem is I have no idea what it should be!!

We're not having a grooms cake at the reception, but I'm surprising FI with a Toronto Maple Leafs cake at the rehearsal dinner! I hope the cake doesn't suck as bad as the team (Ooooooooooh snap! I kid, I kid!)

I still don'T think I understand the groom's cake so it never was considered but I think I'm going to order an ice cream cake for the rehersal dinner as a suprise for him since he loves ice cream cakes (and so do I)!

Ha I'm so glad I found this post, I was just about to start a thread on the same thing! I'm undecided on the matter...FI seems super excited about the cake we already have, and I don't know if I can afford to get another cake. My mom seems appalled at the idea of me NOT doing one, but I just don't know that its necessary. Maybe I'll just get him a simple cheesecake, since that is his favorite...
