We have several late July/ early August birthdays in my office, and yesterday after watching some of my coworkers go for the most frosting-loaded pieces and others eat the cake and leave the frosting, I wondered how this shakes out in the population of brides to be.
So, ladies, what do you prefer?

cake all the way. Toss a cupcake in my direction and you’ll see a pile of frosting left behind.

If it’s a grocery store cake, then the cake. The frosting is usually some sad mixture of shortening and apparently plastic. If it’s cake from a bakery/specialty shop, then both.

Well, since you gave me the option- PIE! SO and I really don’t like cake at all.

I love real buttercream, I love frosting from a can, or even whipped frosting. Grocery store frosting? Barf.

When I was younger I had a system with my cousin. When we got cake we’d pry the frosting off and she would eat the frosting while I ate the cake. It worked quite well because while I enjoy cake most frosting is just too sweet for me. It’s gotten worse since I’ve gotten older too. I had a cupcake a while back and the frosting totally messed up my blood sugar and I got an awful headache in addition to feeling sick to my stomach. FI is most definitely a pie person. I think he would eat pie every day if he could.

Exactly how I feel! I love me some real buttercream or ganache, but typical grocery store or cheap bakery frosting is horrible. Crisco plus a ton of sugar to try to cover up the bitter taste of the shortening. Gross.

@vermonster: Oh, man. Growing up, I was a fat kid. HUGE. And I blame eating tubs of Betty Crocker vanilla frosting. Cake batter is amazing, too, but MAN I could eat frosting.
Now I’m pretty tiny, and it gives me tummy aches. ; ) And everyone makes fun of me.

I never really eat the frosting, or at least much of it. I thought I was pretty odd about that, funny to see a whole thread about it 😛
FI likes both cake and frosting, but it isn’t his favorite dessert so we’re doing alternative desserts at our wedding.

I always scrape the frosting off the cake. Frosting is actually one of the few edible things that I’m picky about. Unless it’s homemade (and even then I’m picky), I’m most likely not going to like it.

I love both!! My mom made our birthday cakes with her homemade buttercream icing, I love it and I can still just eat a scoop of it! Oh and cream cheese icing I could eat on anything!

It has to be both. Cake has to have frosting on it, but not too much! Also, I love pie.

Cake, unless its buttercream or cream cheese frosting 🙂 yum

This thread is about to make me chase down the Cupcake Truck here in DC lol
I’m a bothie. I love equal parts cake and frosting, nothing worse than a big piece of cake with no frosting (dry city!) or a heaping pile of frosting with a meager piece of cake.
