Bees,
I love this topic. Growing up I realized that I was in a minority. The left handed minority!
I thought of this today when I was in a class earlier and when I looked up from writing I noticed that every other student was writing with their right hand! lol
Growing up I have always had a hard time writing in spiral notebooks, you know if your left handed the metal spiral gets in your way, etc. Though it never really bothered me. The world cant cater to everyone. When I was a teen however I found out that they made notebooks specifically made for left handed people. Ive never bought one though.
Ive realized that throughout the years there are WAY MORE right handed people then left. I will put a poll in this thread and I will be very surprised if bees vote more for left!!
I rarely meet other lefthanded people. So much so that theres a small conversation when I do.:)
Whats neat about my family is that both my brothers and myself are all left-handed. And both our parents are right-handed. There arent many left-handed relatives. So much so that when we met our uncles who we've never met before, when he saw us writing left-handed he exclaimed "your laft-handed too"???
Turns out my (new) uncle is also left-handed. And we talked about it for a few minutes. See, a conversation starter. lol
SO bees. Which one are you?Or are u both? My brothers and I can write with both hands however it feels more natural to write with our left. I write with my left and throw a ball with my right. Its weird how it works out.
I am only right handed, I can't do hardly anything with my left hand.
On the other hand, DH is right handed, but bats and plays golf left handed.
@Lindsay12.31.2010: I'm the same! My left hand, although necessary, seems pretty useless at times, lol.
i'm right handed but i uses my left alot.. i think i only write with my right in fact
I'm right handed but my brother is left handed primarily but a lot of things he can do with his right and so is my nephew.
My mom saids that all babies are born left handed but society teaches them to be right handed!
My niece and 2 nephews they all started out left handed! Now only the eldest nephew is sometimes left handed.
@regberadaisy: I'm pretty sure "all babies" isn't true.. but there's probably an element of subconscious training there even if now it's not as common to "train" kids out of being lefthanded. I mean, a lefty baby with righty parent(s) is going to pick up on visual cues associated with right hand usage. So they might actually be a natural lefty, but develop to a righty because of the environment.
I wonder what the family tree association is? Like how many lefties grow up to 2 natural righties (vs. one lefty, one right,. or both lefty)
I am right handed but I can write with left, but that is basically it.. I do everything else with my right hand.. :S
@atalante: I know right? lol
Its weird that our parents are both righties and my two brothers and I are lefties. Ive tried to copy my mom a few times, I could do it, but it was so unnatural for me. I can double check with my other relatives, but as far as I know ,that one uncle is so far is the few of my family who are lefty.
hehe I probably should have said my mom has a "theory" that all babies are born lefties. In my family there is usually one lefty in every family so there probably is some family tree association as to why all babies in my family are lefty when born.
I write left handed, I can write righty if i have to. Do everything else, except use scissors, right handed.
I'm left handed! Growing up I always payed attention to who was left handed in my classes and I felt like we had some kinda special bond or something because we were in the minority. Haha.
Oh, and I do just about everything with my left hand, except bowl. It's really weird. I think it's because I learned to bowl from people who were right handed, so that's how I did it.
Up until about 5th grade I was ambidextrous, but now I'm just a lefty! A lot of my close friends are lefty, too, which is really weird.. like, the core 6 of us are. As for family members, it's just my father, DD, FMIL and myself (that I know of).
Also, we have 2 locations for our work. And the one at the hospital, the 2 managers, and the other girl that works there is left handed. We joke and say that you aren't allowed to work there unless you're a lefty.
I'm a lefty! I always liked being different, although I'm sure you know it comes with a certain amount of annoyances.
I write left handed, I do quite a few other things right handed though.
I've never really understood the spiral notebook thing though... it has two sides, so on the opposite side it isn't an issue, and even if lefty notebooks, the opposite side would still cause a problem...
My main issue is desks. At my college most of the rooms only have small right handed desks so it's impossible to write on, I just set the notebook in my lap because it's easier, but it's really annoying.
I'm a lefty, too. The only one in my family. Over the years, I've gotten used to the "right-hand world". I HATED the desks in jr. high and highschool. Oh and the ink always smearing on the left side of my hand... haha, still have a problem with that some days.
If I need strength or more force, I use my right hand. For more finesse, intricate, and detailed stuff, I use my left. I hold scissors in my right hand and guide the paper with my left. Playing the violin, I have it so my right hand holds the bow and my fingers/nails are on the strings. Shooting a basketball, my left hand is on top for direction and my right hand pushes off to actually get the ball to the basket. For golf, baseball, tennis and stuff, my left hand is in front for control and right hand behind for strength.
Strangely enough, I have more power in my left leg (any sort of kicking motion) in addition to the more detailed stuff with my left foot. I can't balance on my left side, though.
Im both but I favor my right hand more.
I always wish I was a real lefty haha I always loved watching lefties write stuff :)
I'm a lefty and proud of it! My whole family is though, my parents are, my grandparents, aunts and cousins.
I'm right-handed, but I always wanted to be left-handed because it was "different", LOL. : D
FH was born ambidextrous, but had an awful Kindergarten teacher who refused to teach him to use both hands equally & demanded he "choose one", so now he's right-handed.
Omg thats so cool, I never knew people could be both! haha nice!
but Im a Rightyyy!
I'm right-handed for pretty much everything, except for sports such as golf and baseball, where I'm left-handed. It's a family trait, because my dad and my brother are the same way.
This is an interesting conversation.
At work people have been asking me if I am a lefty because I do a lot of the major steps to making drinks with my left hand (I'm a barista). I realized as time has gone on that I pour the milk with my left hand, put the pitcher in the blender with my left hand, etc. But I do everything else with my right hand.
I am a righty but my dad is a very proud lefty... seriously. You would swear there was some superpower that comes from being left handed! I am working on becoming more ambidexterous though. It would make life so much easier!
I'm right handed
DH, his twin sister and two of his cousins who were born the same year as them are all left handed!
I'm a lefty as well! In middle school I would punch holes in the opposite side of the paper so I could write on the paper while it was still in the binder like everyone else
I'm right handed when it comes to writing, but I can write left handed really sloppily. For other every day activites though, I use my left and right pretty equally. I have 4 brothers and 2 of them are left handed, and my uncle too.
This is such a cool thread! I'm like you, Earlybride , I write with my left but throw, knit, and do a lot of other things that are more physical than writing with my right. I know plenty of lefties, but I can't say I know that I know anyone else who does the weird semi/nonambidextrous thing like that.
@TankGirl: I do that. I write and use a knife with my left hand. And maybe a couple other things, but most things I'm right handed in, like sports stuff. But I'm pretty good at switching between hands for anything, since my left hand is fairly strong from writing.
I'm a lefty! I always hated those desks in hs and college! I mean seriously, why should I have to prop my notebook on my leg just so I can semi comfortably write notes! lol I loved having a class that actually had a table to sit at. :)
@galloway111: Yeah, I realized recently that I do eat with my fork or whatever in my left hand. The other day in an exercise class, the instructor had us do bicep curls with each arm and see which arm felt stronger. Everyone else seemed sure, and I was like "Um... I have no idea, they're about the same."
I am right handed but my sister is left handed.
It kind of fits with our personalities, the whole right brain, left brain thing.
I'm right handed.
But my sister is left handed and my brother does certain things left handed and other things right handed.
I'm kind of both. I write with my right hand, but do everything else like a leftie. I have written with my left before however when I had bandages on my right wrist after accidentally breaking a window and getting a bunch of stitches!
