Weight is something like the holy grail when it comes to pregnancy matters. You’re underweight, no good; overweight, no good; you gained too much; you gained too little.
I see that there are new studies emerging suggesting that obese women not gain any weight during pregnancy – or even lose a modest amount of weight (2 pounds a month), and it hasn’t been shown to affect their health or the baby.
But I have to say, I’ve also seen plenty of doctors and health sites suggesting that it’s okay to lose weight while trying to conceive. I’d imagine they’re not talking about women on 1200-calorie a day diets. Just using myself as an example – I’m currently eating about 2300 calories a day and losing 2 pounds a week because of my activity level.
I still have 40 pounds to lose, but I imagine I’d be eating roughly 2000 calories a day and losing weight still even when I get to a ‘healthy’ weight.
How many of you have dieted, exercised or otherwise lost weight while you were trying to conceive? Dieting, of course, goes out the window the moment you find out you’re pregnant.
Most people are at least a few weeks along when they find out they’re pregnant. Is losing weight during that time worth any potential risk to you?
Obviously, trying to conceive can take months, and from the statistics I see, on average, it’s at least 2 – 3 cycles before the majority of women who are trying get pregnant (I think it’s something like 50 – 60% at that point).

I was trying to just get back in shape, because of my wedding plans i lost track of my workout routine. I didn’t gain weight though, because of all the stress i actually lost weight (it wasn’t healthy for me to lose it like that)….anyway iam ttc now and im still working out every day, resting once a week….i hear staying in a healthy weight and workout routine while ttc and while pregnant helps not only when it comes time to deliver your baby, but also helps you after. IDK for sure how, iam not a doctor, but it makes sense. My mom did it, she had 8 kids and looks and feels FAB!

I am! I really want to lose a little weight before I get preggers…I probably have about 40 more pounds to lose as well…but I would be happy to lose just 25. 40 is my ultimate goal but I would be ok with a BFP before I reach that number. I am currently doing Insanity and on my workout days I eat between 1500 and 1600 calories. On my rest day (Sunday), I eat my normal 1200 calories. I will be done with this round of Insanity at the end of January and then plan on continuing with a healthy eating plan and some other type of exercise once this program is done.
We started TTC in October and after AF came in November I realized I needed to start taking care of myself if I was going to someday (soon hopefully!) house a baby
I read an article recently about overweight pregnant women and gestational diabetes. It kind of freaked me out so I’m just trying to live a healthier life style.I don’t see any risk in losing while while TTC but I would definitely (like you said) stop “dieting” if I found out I was pregnant…and I would stop doing Insanity too.
I’m listening in to see what other bees have to say!
