As a guest, what would you truly enjoy more – gazing at 1 beautifully designed wedding cake with a choice of 2 flavours OR a smorgasboard of different bakery style cakes, cheesecakes and other desserts of which you have 10+ choices?
I went to my first cake appointment today and FAR OUT wedding cake is expensive – $360 for a basic 2 tier cake for 70. I would guess the expense comes from the extra labour time decorating. For that same price I could offer my guests a absolute smorgasboard of cakes and desserts, rather than just fruitcake & mudcake in a pretty shell.
To give you back ground on my wedding – it is a casual small wedding on a budget. reception is in a seaside restaurant function room, buffet style.
Oh – pics just for fun!

I don’t care either way – I’d only eat one item off the buffet anyway. By the time dinner’s over, I’ve already been stuffed with apps, salad and entree, not to mention quite a bit of wine. And I’m dancing. 🙂
But it sounds like YOU want to offer the dessert buffet, so I think that’s what you should do. I get wanting to please the guests and think that’s a great mindset as a host, but you should be happy with your choices too. Especially when it comes to something that’s more superfluous than necessity (like good food, drinks, comfortable surroundings, etc.).

Dessert bar would be a-ok by me, especially if it’s cheaper for you!

@sportsgal31: Thanks 🙂 I work in project mgmt, so by habit I look at how to get the most for my money, which is the reason I lean toward the desert bar. You have a point about all of the food prior to dessert though!

i love LOOKING at a pretty cake but would much rather EAT from a desert buffet. I’m considering having a fake cake that looks pretty and we can pretend to cut and then eat from a yummy desert bar!

I love dessert. So the more, the better. We too will be having a dessert buffet and plan on 3-4 per person. I usually pass on cake that has foundant, wich is about 90% these days, unfortunately.

@MsGinkgo: a fake cake is a great idea! can you get those?

Love the dessert bar idea. It’s so hard to pick out a cake flavor and filling that everyone will enjoy. With the dessert bar, everyone gets what they want 🙂

I think a dessert bar is a great Idea! I’m thinking a cheaper cake, like from publix then a dessert bar. Most of the time when I go to weddings, I’m not concerned with the cake anyway. BUT a dessert bar…OH YEAH!

I’ve been to so many weddings and out of all those weddings, I can only remember having three cakes that were actually delicious. I would love to see a dessert bar!

I did a dessert bar that included a few cakes. People loved it!

Honestly, as a wedding guest I’m never bothered about the cake. A great chocolate desert for me is always a winner.

I’m thinking of going for a dessert bar at my wedding. I’m having MAJOR issues with cake/cupcake vendors getting back to me. I might do Pies for our wedding. I mentioned it to a few family members and they LOVED the idea.
