If your wedding is “semi-formal borderline casual” I would only do it if you want to, but I don’t think it’s nesasarry.

We will be having a seating chart at our wedding, but it is a formal affair. For a more casual wedding, assigning tables is a good idea for the reason you listed, and I think that’s enough.

You can if you want to, I want to just so I can make these cute name cards!  But I have to keep reminding myself that its 6 per table…and they can manage on their own, annnd I have zero time to take on that task!

I think it would depend more on the type of meal you are having. If it’s buffet – no need for assigned seating or place cards. If it’s a meal being served, I’ve recently learned some caterers are going to require place cards and a seating chart.

Our caterer requires this because we have a few people who are getting special meals due to dietary restrictions and/or are allergic to something. I had originally not planned to do assigned seatings (since for some reason my FI was against it), but now I have to because of the caterer.

We are doing assigned tables, but not assigned seats. Each person will get a favor box/name card that will assign their table and the color of the box indicates the meal option. The ones with a special meal at the table get a gold star on the name box. Would something like that work for you?

Not really necessary in my opinion, but I am doing it for two reasons. One: To indicate the meal they chose on their place card to help the wait staff.  And two: I’m putting a small favor on each tag.  Most people will just rearrange their seating anyway at the table if they don’t want to sit beside the wall or what have you.

We assigned tables but not seats.  Honestly though, after the meal was served most people were either at the bar or on the dance floor so it was only for eating that anyone was even at their actual table.

Ours is an afternoon wedding so less formal so just table numbers here. BUT I did buy the cutest name cards with little bells (for them to ring when they want us to kiss) so I will name name cards set out for them but they will take it with them to their table and pick their own seat. I hope it works the way I am envisioning it in my head lol

@mjwyatt84:  Cute! Get your MC to announce what the bells are for, and I’m sure at that point if people have not taken them to their tables, they’ll go back and get them 🙂
