I’m a new member (though I found this site a few months ago when I was engagement ring shopping and lurked for a while). All of these forums have been a great help! I never thought that I wanted a wedding, and still didn’t think I’d have one until about a week ago (I got engaged 6 months ago).
But, family pressure is getting to us and we think we migh regret not having at least a small reception so we’re thinking about having a Fall 2015 wedding reception in Raleigh/Durham, NC. I’m open to the date (I guess that will depend on venue availability.
Neither one of us lives in Raleigh (we live in Houston), but Raleigh will be convenient for both families. So, I will be planning this from across the country.
Here is where I could use some help:
I’m looking for a venue that’s not too far from the airport (to accomodate traveling guests or to at least make airport pickups easier), that offers good food (the food is the most important thing) or allows for outside catering, will allow me to have an open bar at a reasonable price or allows me to provide my own alcohol and bartender (drinks are important also), and isn’t a massive space (I only need to accomodate about 50 people- maybe even 40) for about $100 a person. Is that reasonable? Should I be upping my price? I’m lost, and I have no girlfriends or cousins to ask (no one’s married!). Obviously, I don’t really have a budget yet, but I’m hoping not to spend a tremendous amount of money- like, hopefully keep it under 5k, but we’ll do what we have to do to have something nice and small.
Does anyone have any advice? I was initally thinking about just having a meal in a restaurant’s private room, but we may have to have the actual “ceremony” (which will just likely be our pastor marrying us in the reception room before the “party”- no walking down the aisle, no traditional customs) in the same room as the reception and I think having the wedding ceremony in a restaurant room may be a little crass…but I’m open!

There are plenty of options for a beautiful small reception in the RDU area; and fall in NC is gorgeous!
So small wedding options to look into:
-Caffe Luna– probably THE most popular downtown location for a small wedding. Great italian food, multiple size rooms avaliable, right in the heart of downtown Raleigh. This is likely your best bet!!
-Mateo’s- downtown Durham. This is a really unique venue; spanish style tapas. They have a nice upstairs room thats good.
-City of Raleigh Venues- all a la carte but a wide variety of affordable options. – http://www.raleighnc.gov/parks/content/PRecRecreation/Articles/RentalInformationUniqueVenues.html
-Durham Arts Council- very affordable facility; a la carte everything else.
-Second Empire (Raleigh)- More expensive, but absolutely beautiful place with top notch food and service.
–Sitti (Raleigh)- this place has a GORGEOUS courtyard attached to the restaurant. I have seen some truely beautiful ceremony receptions and ceremonies there! They also have a private room.
If you would like some more PM me your email and I can send you a massive list of large and small venues that I started working from.

- Wedding: October 2014 - Restaurant
The PP has some good recommendations.
Our guests are staying at the Holiday Inn (old Clarion) in downtown Raleigh, and they have a shuttle. It’s only like 15 minutes from the airport to Raleigh anyways though.
Second Empire seems like a really cool place to have a small wedding reception.
The Stockroom on Fayetteville St. downtown is also really cool. It was my runner-up wedding venue! They don’t do the food there, so I would recommend Rocky Top Catering – they are sooo good.

I just wanted to pop in to say thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions. My guest count has significantly risen (this seems to be a common occurrence with weddings!) and we have have decided to have our wedding in a different city (we got a great deal). I heavily considered Caffe Luna (it’s a great value) but we wouldn’t have been able to have our ceremony there (the restaurant couldn’t accomodate it on a Saturday).
I hope that this thread hopes other Raleigh brides, as it was a great help to me.
