@bella731:  Which kit are you using?  I use Red Carpet Manicure, which is only about $10 per bottle of polish, but exactly the same as the more expensive Gelish.  They sell the bottles of RCM polish at Ulta, so I can open them up and take a peek before buying.

@bella731: I have never tried using regular polish with the clear coat, but it definitely works with the polish strips. I use the base coat then the strips then the clear top coat with a UV light.

Red Carpet Manicure is cheaper. I have a license so I use OPI Gel polish in the nail polish bottle (forget the exact name). It is far superior than other brands, IMO. There is a red glitter color of Gelish I like for the winter time, though.

Regular polish will not work with the gel top coat. I tried 🙁 The gel topcoat won’t bond to regular nail polish, so you’re just wasting the gel topcoat.

Is there any way you can use a different brand of gel polish?

@bella731:  Oh yeah, I get what you mean.  It’s really hard to tell since you can’t just test them out.

@bella731:  I’m in the same boat! I’ve been taking Biotin for a few months so they’re getting better now. But every once in a while, one will break clear down to the quick 🙁

I don’t do my own nails but i do get gel manicures.  IF i choose a polish color that isn’t gel, she just put 2-3 top coats and it lasts the entire time until the next time i get my nails done.  Frequently i get tons of glitter (she has pots of glitter everywhere and we use the base coat to give the glitter something to stick to and then 2 lays of top coat.  The topcoat is by CND. 🙂 Hope this helps.

I have a gel kit and I’ve done the gel cured base coat, regular nail polish, and gel cured topcoat. It works pretty well and lasts for the same amount as all gel. I can never get it to last 2-3 weeks though, but I’m obviously not that good at applying it.

@bella731:  TBH i think she used to buy the pots of glitter from a craft store…or like beauty supply.  Now she uses CND brand.  Here’s my nails now.  We did one coat of china glaze aquadelic, then i legit dipped my fingers in the glitter and tapped them off.  Top it off with 2 coats of gel top coat.  The camera doesn’t catch the sparkle these babies throw off in normal lights.

I pay so little to get my nails done bc i have been going to her forever, but i wish i was good enoug to do it at home!

@bella731:  I haven’t tried doing this, but if you google gelish “sandwich” or gelly sandwich you’ll find lots of threads with people posting about trial and error.  I’ve read mixed results but I think it’s worth a try at least, that way you can use regular polishes that you already own.

Also….if you have a UV light already, there’s a UV cure topcoat by Seche Vite that you can use with regular polish without the UV gel base coat.  ie. just a normal manicure with this topcoat, UV cure and done.

@bella731:  For me it lasts about 10 days, then it starts growing out and bugging me. And since I’m not perfect at applying it, some edges start peeling up and chipping off. But 10 days is way longer than regular nail polish and they feel soooooo shiny and smooth.

I have done it with just a regular OPI nail polish color coat, and cured a Gel top coat. It worked. It lasted for about 1 1/2 weeks. (I didn’t use a Gel base coat bc it still is wet with a film, even after it has been cured. I didn’t want to get that in my regualr nail polish.)
