I am having a wedding in the beautiful Italian countryside in March 2014. We are paying for a reception there. We are also paying for hotel stay for the night of our wedding and partial airfare costs for our immediate families (this is very costly!).
My family has been urging us to make arrangements for a low key at-home reception when we return. No DJ, flowers, etc. Just good food and acknowledgments of our wedding for family members and friends that are unable or unwilling to come. Cost about 5-10K.
I was open to the idea in the beginning, but given the wedding costs for going abroad, we are having second thoughts. In addition, our family has been very unappreciate of our shelling out money, and they have actually complained that the location wasn’t their first choice.
Should we bother with an at-home reception, or just forget about it?

@destinwed: I voted yes, keep the cost down by making it a low key potluck! It will be fun and it allows other family members to feel important to you too!!

why would at an at home reception with out DJ or flowers cost upwards of 10 grand? How many people are you planning and just how fancy do you need it? How about just doing a BBQ?

I voted yes but I agree, it doesn’t have to cost a lot! Even if you had a backyard BBQ or something I cant imagine spending more than a thousand dollars or something!

@destinwed: I’m in the exact same boat as you…my parents actually want me to have the whole wedding at home so they can “invite everyone” but my dream has always been to get married in Hawaii so I’m not budging on that. Some of my family members have also complained about the location so I definitely feel your pain!
I think the at-home reception is a good idea if it’s something low-key. For me, if it came down to it and my family insisted on a reception, I would take this route. Nothing elaborate, no full-blown wedding reception type thing at a banquet hall or anything like that. I like the idea of a bbq actually!

Thank you for the responses!
We live in NY and even if we do a luncheon or brunch, we are looking at 40-50 dollars per person, which is cheap here. We have big families combined with coworkers and friends, with gratuity we estimate a minimum of 6k for the cost. Otherwise neither of our families have room for over 120 people in their homes. Not sure what we can do here…looks like we have to do something though. I should think of something creative.
