Okay so I was buying stuff off our baby registry to fill in the gaps of stuff that absolutely needs to be here before baby comes, and I noticed that my coworkers across the country had purchased a changing table that we need. It’s from IKEA and was listed on the universal registry on Amazon — but because it’s from IKEA and not Amazon, I don’t think I can do my usual customer service on Amazon approach to find out what happened to it.
Because it was purchased 3 weeks ago, and it hasn’t arrived. And it’s kind of important — I need to get it in my hands and get it cleaned and stocked put in place before baby is born.
I know my coworkers have my correct address, so I can’t figure out any sensible explanation of what might have happened to it. I think it just may have gotten lost.
When should I contact my coworkers to ask about it? And how would I go about it? I feel really weird doing that, because it involves admitting that I basically spied on my registry and that I know what gift they bought me. But if it got lost, I’m sure they want to know!
Other possible solution: buying the changing table from IKEA myself and then just returning the other one if it ever arrives, so I don’t need to stress about getting my hands on it in a hurry. Hmmmm.

I don’t think its ever okay to inquire about where a gift is. I see the issue here though. If it were me I would likely just buy the one I want and return the other if it ever shows up.

I think you’re gut feeling on just contacting them and being like “Hey so greatful for your gift, I just want to make sure everything is ok b/c I haven’t seen it and would hate for something to have happened”
You could also mention you get registry updates when someone purchases you a gift.

I would try the amazon route first, then if you get nowhere I would buy it myself then just return the one they got you when it eventually arrives. Either way I hope you get one soon!

Shipping directly from Ikea is insanely expensive, because it’s hand delivered by truck instead of UPS, FedEx, etc. Is it possible that one of them is going to be driving it out to you? (I realize this is kind of a dumb question if they live across the country, but thought I’d ask anyway.)
@Bazinga: Amazon’s Universal wish list feature lets you put items from ANY website on it. Contacting Amazon won’t get her anywhere because it wasn’t purchased from them.

I don’t know how IKEA deliver in the US but over here their deliveries can be slower than some places because they use their own trucks and wait until they have a full load to deliver in the same geographical area. So when I bought our couch, new chairs and some bedroom furniture I waited about 3 weeks for it to arrive. So don’t lose hope yet!

I would just say what happened, say that you were looking at your registry to see what final items were left on the registry that you still needed and saw it was purchased but has not been delivered. Say sonething along the lines of you were intending on purchasing it soon but just wanted to check with them first so you dhaver end up with two.

I would first try to track it down through ikea or amazon, then I would ask. I really don’t think it’s a big deal to ask about it. If someone ordered and paid for a gift for you and it got lost, they want to know. It’s not rude to make sure something they paid good money for didn’t get lost in the mail. I’d probably wonder what was wrong with you if you kept quiet and I found out 6 months later that something I paid for got sent to someone in Peru or some ridiculous shit like that

Did they “give” you the gift yet? Meaning, did you have a shower already or did you just look at your items before your shower and know it’s purchased but hasn’t arrived? They may have shipped it to their own house and will bring it to the shower, assuming that’s why you set up the registry (for the shower).
If you hadn’t had your shower yet, I’d wait until after that to purchase gifts or inquire about missing ones. I know it’s hard to not get excited and want things here now and organized, but you do have a bit of time so I’d wait if you can.

It’s been 3 weeks and you’ve already had your shower, right? I would definitely give her a call and ask!

@Steampunkbride: ah, I wonder if the IKEA shipping is part of the problem …
@MadTownGirl: I already had my shower, and these coworkers live on the East coast of the US while I now live in the Seattle area, so they definitely can’t be planning on giving it to me directly, which is why I’m concerned it just may have gotten lost.
There’s an IKEA near my work so I may stop in there and just buy the table myself so that I can get it all organized while I sort out things with the one my coworkers bought! then I can figure the situation out at my leisure instead of trying to be in a big hurry to get it into my hands.

@iarebridezilla: I would do that or call the coworkers and see if they can locate it for you.

@Bazinga: This is why I’m kind of cursing — after our wedding, one gift was ordered but went missing so I was able to contact Amazon and get it all sorted out without the giver ever knowing. But since this was IKEA I can’t really call and be like “Hi, some dude named Bob ordered something three weeks ago; can I check on the status of that order? No of course I don’t have the order number; I’m not Bob! I’m just some rando! Hello? Hellooo?” Dagnabbit!!
@MsJ2theZ: yeah, I definitely don’t want the whole thing to just get lost in the ether! Especially since I haven’t sent a thank-you card yet, since I haven’t gotten it yet … so if it’s on its way to Jim-Bob in Peru, then my coworkers also think I’m an asshole who never thanked them for their gift. It’s quite a pickle I’m in.

@iarebridezilla: Did they tell you they ordered it or does it just say they did from the registry?
Which table is it? I just plugged in a random changing table (Sundvik black/brown) and it tells me this upon check out (I didn’t have to complete it to get this message). Soooo you should have gotten it by now unless it’s out of stock, and they should have a confirmation and tracking number.

@MsJ2theZ: The coworkers never mentioned it, which is also part of why I’m so reluctant to bring it up. I just see it show up on the “purchased” section in the registry with my boss’s name listed as the buyer. Very suspicious indeed :-/
It’s the Spoling folding table. It’s only $80 so it’s not a big deal to just go out and buy another one. But then when do I send a thank-you card????
