Sigh. Wedding Bee ate my post. Just wanted to say that I've really enjoyed reading this thread, and, although I'm currently struggling with my own lack of faith, it's heartening to know that someday I might be in a state of mind where it isn't a struggle to admit that I don't believe.

I went to a Christian school for 6 years, and it was able to help me realize that I do not believe in God, or any kind of deity for that matter. I believe in evolution. I will not write what I think of the bible and its mesage, because I don't want to start any kind of argument.

I am also offended by certain people who say they will pray for me, when I can tell they are doing it to be condescending about it.  I think that everyone should believe what they want to believe and keep it to themselves and the people who believe the same thing. When you start trying to push your beliefs on someone else, you are asking for trouble

I know this an old thread but I have to say reading through it truly makes me feel a sense of community in the realm of atheism. Living in the bible belt I feel like I have to keep my beliefs to myself while others are parading with their beliefs on their chest. I'm always concerned that an employer or close friend will think of me differently and it will have adverse affects on my life. As I tried to explain to my FI, being an atheist the biggest thing I'm missing is a sense of community that other non-atheists get on a daily basis while they attend church. I'm happy to see so many Bees hold the same views as I do.

@lilyfaith: Sorry I haven't read most of the responses but had to comment as things are SO different here in the UK- it is literally the EXACT OPPOSITE here, and I'm not joking! We should probably switch countries as I'm Catholic and treated like I have two heads by most people- and it seems atheists are treated the same in the US!

Seriously though, in real life in the UK, if you are religious- especially full on practicing your faith- your nuts, simple! lol
