We had both our ceremony and reception at The Mansion at Maple Heights in Shadyside, and stayed at the Mansion with our wedding party. For our guests, we did our hotel room block with the Shadyside Inn, which was basically down the hill from the Mansion, within walking distance. There was a free shuttle, but no one knew about it until the wedding was over. We did not use a limo service, because all of them gave us freakishly expensive estimates. And our caterer was LaCreme – their food was absolutely fantastic. Not to toot our own horns, but it was the best food I’ve ever had a wedding, and a lot of our guests shared that sentiment.
In regards to deciding where to do your hotel block – it somewhat depends on how much of a party you want your reception to be. If guests have to make it across town to get from your reception venue to their hotel, they aren’t as likely to stay as late. For our reception, noise regulations dictated that we had to be quiet and have our not-staying-at-the-Mansion guests leave the venue by 11pm. However, we ended up having an impromptu after party in Shadyside, along Walnut St, so that legally mandated deadline didn’t dictate the end of our evening.

I live really close to Hartwood Acres and I would definitely try booking hotels in the north hills instead of greentree. Best case scenario, that’s a half hour drive, MINIMUM. If they’re in Greentree, your guests will have to deal with the mess that is Route 28. Avoid that at all costs!
Try maybe Allison Park or Harmar? There should be hotel choices near the turnpike exits. Good luck!!

@JeniRae: Yeah, the lady at the venue said that 28 is going to be like that for the next FIVE years. Ugh. I swear Pittsburgh is just one big mess of constant construction and nothing seems to be better at the end of it!
We are doing the afternoon ceremony/reception. Hartwood required everything to be over by 6pm and clean up by 7pm. We are having an after party though at an Irish Pub…perhaps Molly B’s. (Half of his family will be flying in from Ireland so it will be fun)
Anyone deal with All Occasions party rental?

My venue used All Occasions as their exclusive rental company, but the coordinator at the venue acted as a go-between, so I didn’t have any personal contact with them. I know that they definitely delivered – everything was set up the day before and they followed my (freakishly anal-retentive) diagram as to where everything was supposed to go. But I can’t comment on their customer service, only their execution.

I booked the Airport Marriott for my receptions and my ceremony is at a church in the South Side. The hotel does provide a shuttle I think but I dont think we’ll utilize it. I think that it would probably be ideal for you to stay on the same side of the city, but I think if its better for you to be in greentree thats ok too. I do know that as a guest I would appreciate a closer hotel. And chances are you may find a hotel close to Hartwood Acres that will shuttle.

@Mrs.ice: My prom was at the Marriott. Very nice! I’m just not familar with that side of the city. I accidently came across Hartwood when looking for outdoor venues.
