So, we booked our engagement photo shoot. We will be taking our photos down in DUMBO which is right under the Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn, NY. There is a beautiful park with the Manhattan skyline in the background, cobblestone streets, grafitti walls. DUMBO adds a special uniqueness to engagement photos.
See what I mean? I love the versatility of this spot. So now that we have the place, I am thinking about what to wear. We want to look comfortable and look like ourselves in our photos so I brought a shirt dress and flats. That is a cute and comfortable outfit for photos, but then I came across this…..
I brought this dress too. I brought it on a whim just to have for the summer, but when I got home, I thought it might look nice for the engagement shoot. The only thing is that I am thinking that it may be too dressy for engagement photos. I need your opinions hive….Do you guys think this dress is too dressy for an engagement shoot?

Ahh I got engaged there!! Love it! Your pics are going to be so fun! I love that dress, too. If you’re worried about it being too dressy, you could dress it down with flats instead of heels and casual jewelry. Have fun!

There’s a lot of restaurants in the area. Perhaps do a casual shoot first – go to a diner in the area, have lunch, use the rest room to change and then do the second half of the shoot. More than one look would be great if you could swing it.

tehehe all I could think of was taking pictures in the Dumbo ride at Disney

Personally I’d like something more edgy/funky to go with that area, and I don’t feel like the dress pictured fits the bill. I don’t know what you normally wear/are comfortable wearing, but since your first outfit is a shirt dress, how about jeans and a cute top? I think one dress is enough, but if you are not a jeans/pants wearer feel free to disregard my advice.

@LiseRamosMorales: We aren’t doing outfit changes. We are traveling from NJ for the shoot, to have to bring clothing would be a hassle.
@mcklough: When my friend suggested it, I looked at her like she was crazy. Where the heck is DUMBO? lol.
@Frog E.: Thanks for the advice. I was contemplating jeans and a top until the only date available was in late June. A hot day in NYC in jeans can lead to disaster for me. I figured something flowy and comfortable will keep me cool, and not make me look sweaty in the photos.

@FutureMrsSpencer: I hadn’t even thought about the weather–you have a very valid point there. We did ours last year on Memorial Day weekend out on Governor’s Island, and both wore jeans. It wasn’t too bad since it’s at least breezy out there, but on a really hot day… And I did manage to get really sunburned, too. Don’t forget your sun block!
I still think I like the idea of shirt dress better, though.

I love the dress, but I always think that white and black are tricky on film. A bright color might pop a little more, so you might consider a colored belt or fun shoes–even red lipstick would give it a nice kick! Don’t worry so much about “matching” the scenery–it’s scenery! YOU are the star!
DUMBO’s such a great backdrop. Have fun!

@BothCoasts: I agree. One of my BM’s was with me shopping and she told me that I needed to add color. I found a great coral colored statement necklace and flat sandals. I think the color will help, but I am still undecided. I have some time but not that much.
@Frog E.: I am undecided. I think I am going to put on both dresses plus accessories and decide within the next couple weeks.
