I'm heading to the florida keys. You should bee good in august there. check out this site it is really inexpensive for the rooms and it looks beautiful www.hawkscay.com from the reviews its more of a couples resort
^^^While the Keys are beautiful, August is actually the HEIGHT of hurricane season.
Ivygal, what type of destination are you looking for? Tropical beach, mountains, etc.? Keep in mind that south of the Equator the seasons are flipped, so you could actually go skiing in South America if you wanted to!
We are looking for something tropical. Originally, we thought Mexico - but a lot of those areas are still technically hurricane season locations, and the water issue is a big thing for me. I don't want to have to worry about turning into Charlotte on SATC!
We are now looking at Hawaii, Bonaire, Curacao, Fiji, etc. I think 7k is our absolute max for 7 days.
Thoughts? Has anyone done the luxury Mexico thing and been free from tummy issues?
we are going to bora bora, we leave july 27th and come home after a week so that can be considered august right?
yah i think we are planning to go to hawaii for our honeymoon, haven't booked anything as of yet
We haven't really planned our honeymoon yet. we're trying to see where our wedding budget comes in at first. We don't have much money so we'll have to see how much is left after all is said and done. We're hoping to have a fun filled few days in sunny San Diego and then take a tropical getaway for our one-year anniversary.
Our plan, as long as we can stay safely in the wedding budget, is the Mediterranean. We're thinking flying into Barcelona and going through the French Riviera, Italy, Dalmatian Coast and Greece. That may change though, we both like less structured travel best (so no luxury-all-inclusive stuff). Late August and September are some of the best times to fly and stay cheaper since the summer vacationers are generally done but the weather's still great!
Ivygal,
If you're getting married near the end of August, you might consider looking into a European honeymoon. September is generally less expensive because it's past the busy summer season, but the weather is still nice. I just did a quick Expedia search and found a package including airfare for two to Paris and seven nights in a four-star Parisian hotel for only $4000. And there are plenty of beautiful beaches on the Mediterranean that will be cheaper than Paris.
Good luck and have fun!
We are gonna roll the dice and go to Dominica in the carribean...
and if we get hit with a hurricaine and survive, then we should be able to survive anything together! (just kidding, seriously hoping for no storms to hit while we are there).
We haven't booked yet, so we may still change our minds, but I'm pretty sure this is where we are going to end up.
--Crash,
While you're in that area, you can consider going to Majorca or Minorca, which are Islands right off of Spain. They're the "Hawaii" of Spain! We went to Majorca two years ago (also spelled Mallorca) and it was beautiful, but we went in March so it wasn't as pretty because it was still off season and a bit cold. Anyway, have fun!

Our wedding was August 2008 and we honeymooned at Sandals, Ocho Rios in Jamaica -- it was PERFECT!!! We loved it so much that we booked a return trip for our honeymoon before we left. Our honeymoon pics are at www.singhiphotos.shutterfly.com if you are interested in seeing the location.
We are going on a Mediterranien Cruise. The wedding is August 15th but we are waiting until September 24th to go.
We're actually thinking we'll hit up Canada or somewhere in the Rockies - potentially CO. A nice cabin in the woods or a condo, beautiful scenery, and lots of hiking. We kind of want a kitchenette so we can eat at least a meal a day (breakfast) at our cabin to save some cash.
Anyone else going somewhere that isn't tropical??
Miss Marshmallow - We're with you! We're doing Vancouver, Victoria, and Whistler British Columbia. We just decided that since we do the tropical thing pretty much every winter to escape the intolerable midwest winters, we'd try something a little different. We've talked to several different people who have been to B.C. and many have said it is more amazing than anywhere they've been in the world. I hear Victoria is a lot like an even more like the Queen's England than London actually is. And, Whistler is quite the opposite - just trees, mountains, and waterfalls for miles. Anyone else going to B.C.? If so, anything that is a MUST-DO while we're there?
If you want to be somewhere exotic and tropical, but still avoid hurricanes, August is a great time to visit the south of Thailand. It's the low season so everything will be a lot cheaper. Your biggest expense will be airfare (probably not more than $3k for both of you) and then once you arrive, accommodations, meals and activities will be surprisingly affordable! (Think $30 for a fabulous multi-course dinner on the waterfront - for 2 people.)
I was recently in Railay, on the Phra Nang Peninsula, in the Krabi region of Thailand a couple months ago and it was AMAZING. Warm, clear water... the finest white sand... dramatic limestome karst formations surrounding all the beaches. It took my breath away. Also, there are many islands (such as Phuket, Koh Phi Phi etc) that are all within easy travel by boat, so you could explore several places instead of just sticking to one island. The more popular ones are rather tourist-oriented with more amenities, while Railay is sort of the undiscovered gem.
Good luck in your planning!
We are going on a 12-day Mediterranean cruise. Leaving from Barcelona and arriving in Venice. I am soooooo excited!
Just a warning about southern Thailand in August--it can be GORGEOUS, but it can also be VERY rainy (August is monsoon season). I was in Thailand for all of August 2007, and the weather was very mixed. As long as you have a nice hotel, though, and don't mind spending some afternoons in your room (it is the honeymoon, after all....) you should be ok. Also the eastern side (Koh Samui, etc. ) is drier than the west.
We're going to Belize for our Aug 09 honeymoon! We might get some rain too, but I'm still SO excited :)
We're getting married in July, not August, but close enough, right? We decided last weekend that we're going to Great Britain. It's not as exotic as other destinations we'd been contemplating, but it makes loads of sense for us. He has dual citizenship but has never even been to his other "home" country; I'm getting a Ph.D. in British literature, love all things British, and have been many times. I'm really excited to "show" it to him :)
My mom owns a time share in Vegas and wasn't able to use it this year. She said we could have it, so we're using that as our honeymoon. While it's not my number one place to visit, we only have a week to honeymoon and Vegas is only 4 hours away. Also, with a free hotel room, it gives us some money to spend on fun things to do.
were actually going to wait to have our honeymoon in Jan Feb 2010, no big deal! we will also have more vacation time so we can do our 2 week vacation no problemo!
I am getting married on 8/8 and leaving the next day for Puerto Vallarta Mexico. I already live in Florida so hurricane season doesn't really bother me. There is no use for us to try and plan around hurricane season because there is no way to guess. I'm not going to sacrifice where we want to go because there might possibly be a hurricane. Not sure if this might make you feel better but September is the peak of the season anyways.
I'm getting married at the end of July (close enough to August), but we're going to Hawaii for our honeymoon. We got a great price off Trip Advisor where we saved $800 from booking the hotel and flight separately. Although it took a while to logistically plan out, it was well worth it. We saved a lot of money we can use during the honeymoon!
