Hi Texican -
I am planning my wedding in Austin as well, but live in Dallas. can you give me your listing of vendor recommendations that may help me out? I can only manage to make it down there every couple of months. We at least have our wedding venue and date set but that is about all that we have done at this point. Any guidance you can give would be much appreciated!
Sorry I can't help with the DJ though.
I just got married in Austin on June 20! We used Barrington with Texas Pro DJ, and he was AMAZING! He kept people on the dance floor all night and did a great job of choosing songs that our crowd liked. Also, he was very organized and so easy to work with. He's not a cheesey wedding DJ at all - he's a really cool guy, very talented and great at what he does. As you can prolly tell, I really can't say enough good things about him! We did go a little over our DJ budget when we hired him, but it was well worth it!
Feel free to email me at linzella@yahoo.com or send me a private message if you'd like more info on him or our other vendors. Happy planning!
I know a great DJ who's Dallas-based but would probably be willing to travel if you get desperate. Worst case, he might be able to recommend somebody down there. We used him for our DFW wedding and had a blast. We were originally going to go the iPod route, but when we realized that he wasn't going to cost too much more than that and could manage things if there was, say, an equipment malfunction, we decided to hire him. His prices are ridiculously reasonable, he listened to our music requests, he didn't say a bunch of cheesy stuff, and he was just an overall nice guy. Here's his website: http://pathestermusicdj.com/
We're getting married a little South of Austin (Kyle) and using a company called Ultimate Sound...I have NOT had the pleasure yet of seeing them in action (ask me more on that after October!) but in talking with them on the phone and using their website to do the set up and music selection, I've been VERY impressed.
And the price was right!
Here's a link to their website, in case you're interested:

Good Luck!
I just left Austin in November after 17 years. Y'all are making me homesick! If anyone is still looking, I have a friend, August, who is a great wedding DJ. His company is Creative Balance, and his email is creativbalance@gmail.com

Hello!
i feel like my FI and I have found just about all of our vendors, except for a DJ.
It's been a bit of a thorny subject for us - I originally wanted to go with an iPod hooked up to speakers, so we could ensure no annoying songs would be played. My FI wanted a live band at first (which I am *strongly* against) and now wants a DJ. He doesn't want to dictate the entire playlist, and also doesn't want to be worried that something will go wrong. I understand where he's coming from.
We both agree that we don't want a standard "wedding DJ" - a kind of annoying, middle-aged guy who plays the same songs you always hear at weddings and won't stop talking on the mic. Ideally, we'd want someone close to our age, who won't talk *at all* (our MOH and Best Man will be emcees, if needed), and will understand what kind of music we like and build on that.
We went to the Bridal Extravaganza a few weekends ago and weren't interested in any of the DJs there. Does anyone have any recommendations? I figure there are enough hipster DJs in Austin, there must be one somewhere who can spend a Saturday evening in January playing our wedding.
Thanks!
