You don't have to match. He could be in maybe dress pants and a solid colored button down or sweater, and you could be in a solid-colored dress?
In ours, he wore a bright turquoise shirt and I had on black with earrings that matched his shirt. Not matchy, but enough to keep it organized-looking. We had an outfit change (800 pictures total), and he wore a dress shirt with light colored pin stripes that matched the light colored sweater I had on. Again - not matchy, but organized. Keep it simple.
we had a studio session so we changed outfits and back drops. we had three different looks:
a) dark blue background and casual: he wore a grey button down with jeans and i wore a teal v-neck sweater with grey undershirt and leggings.
b) black and white background, more formal: i wore a white button down dressy tunic thing and he wore a black dress shirt and dress pants
c) an alley background (we weren't sold on it but the photog had just gotten it and begged us to do some pictures infront of it because of FH's tattoos): i wore a lt grey sweatshirt like tunic thing with leggings and he wore his black button down with jeans
Everything turned out great but our favorite was the teal because it just popped with everything
Also, layers, although technically not an outfit change, will change the look as you remove your coat or sweater etc and will give you more options.
FI and I are getting our pics done in November and we'll be doing them inside and out. He's wearing a grey sweater with a small argyle pattern (just down the front) with some blues, blacks and purples in it. I plan on wearing a black button down with a purple cardigan and I'll probably bring a coat too just in case it gets chilly! I actually blogged about it here.
I think a lot of couples haven't stuck to the "rules" but wear what fits their personality and what they are comfortable in and that always makes for better photos. Good luck and can't wait to see the pics!
I think jewel tones would look really lovely for fall, but I'd really just go with what you feel the best in.
An almost gold/mustard yellow looks fantastic in the fall. Especially if you have a very fair or creamy skintone.. or red hair.
It also looks amazing on brunettes..
This is the shirt I'm going to wear.. the suggestion was from my photographer.
I am beyond pale.. and colour my hair red.. so.. maybe if you can imagine that?
I've been wondering the same thing, since we are getting ours done as well. I was thinking about a brown or burgundy sweater and having him in a red stripped button down. Still not 100% sure!
I don't follow the rules so I would wear skinny jeans, caramel color boots and a blousy tunic with patterns - colors of purple/oranges and cream with a burgandy tanktop underneath.
I would embrace the colors of the fall and rock them with bronze/copper accessories.
and I would totally bring a hat and do the Mary Tyler Moore pose (where she throws the hat up in the air I mean) ;)

Originally, my FI and I were planning on both wearing a black shirt (his a collar and mine a V neck) but since seeing the photos of others who both wear black, I'm starting to reconsider because when the bride is in front of the groom she sort of disappears within his black shirt.
We're having our photos taken in a park and the leaves are in the middle of turning colors so I'm trying to decide what colors would be best. I know I'll be wearing jeans and he will be in a pair of dark dress pants, but as for the tops... I have no idea.
According to info I've found online: "Clothing should be kept neutral and should match the location. So, for the beach clothing should be white, cream, beige, blue or pastels. Park photo shoots are best in tans, blues and greens" but it doesn't make sense for us to wear red and orange in a backdrop full of the same colors.
Any suggestions would be great!
