You can always buy cheap illustrations from istockphoto -- it's what we did when we first started weddingbee!
I was also going to suggest istockphoto. I like the site you posted, Mrs. Bee...that could be fun to play around with so I just bookmarked it!

I am going to be writing for another blog for my job, and we are looking for avatars. We would like a coherent theme among them. One suggestion has been to use sites where you can make a cartoon version of yourself.
