What do you think would be an average budget for a destinaion wedding, do you have to pay for your guests travel? we plan on paying for our parents travel and hotel stay.

We said we were going to pay for certain people but when we started looking at costs more closely, we realized we couldn't afford it.  We spent about $15k on the actual wedding day, but with our airfare, stay and welcome party, we ended up spending about 22k (not including our attire, etc).  We had some family members that took on certain parts so luckily it wasn't ALL on us.  But after paying for two great events (welcome party and wedding), we just couldn't afford to foot the bill for anything else - and everybody was perfectly fine with that!

I should mention we had about 35 guests at our wedding and it was in the Bahamas, which can be a little pricey.  I have heard of small 10-15 person weddings costing only 10k.

If you have the money to spare, maybe you can rent a large house and have immediate family/wedding party stay there for a night or two to cover their stay for the events.  Anything beyond that could be on them :-)

We're getting married in Turks & Caicos and it's costing us $25kish for 40 guests.  We're not paying for any travel for any guest and everyone is ok with that and never expected otherwise.  Our venue was more than half of the budget so you can do it for less it just really depends what you want.  I think an all inclusive or hotel package can get costs down (Sandals is running some specials for free weddings!).

When most people think of DW's they think very simple and low cost but it really feels like everything cost double down there!

We didn't pay for anyone's airfare or accomodations. We figured wherever we got married, more than half of the guests would have to travel anyway. It ended up costing ~$12K for 100 people, not including the rehearsal dinner. Because 80% of the guests were from out of town, we invited everyone to the rehearsal dinner and it was an additional $4K.
