For those of you who have your hair highlighted professionally: can you please tell me how much do you pay? I've never had my hair highlighted before but, the girl who usually does my cuts charges around $110, I was told thats her base price. I personally think this sounds a little expensive, would I be right to think so or am I just being overly thrifty? My hair is just past my chin.

    Thanks in advance. :)

When I used to have it done, it was $225, and tbh, it looked like poop. She went way too overboard.

I live in Pittsburgh, and when I get my hair cut and highlighted, my stylist charges around $125.

I think like everything else it varies.  I paid $75 + tip on Tuesday when I had my above shoulder length hair highlighted which was $20 cheaper than before the wedding when it was much longer.  Since you are in MI, I'm trying to remember but I think I paid around the same thing the few times I had it done in Royal Oak, MI (over a year ago).

I have thick hair down to my bra strap and I pay $45 for a FULL HEAD of highlights. I go to a beauty school. =]

I'd easily pay $150 now, in the midwest, for my ridiculously long thick hair. Back in Cali, more like $250. I also get toned every single time and I get a chem shot to keep my color. I have lots and lots of multi-tonal colors in my hair. It looks so blah otherwise.

I got it done at a nice salon (I have medium to long-ish hair, about 4 inches past my collarbone) and it was $200 before tip. It did take forever, though, as she did a lot of foils.

One plus of highlighting - it lasts a LOT longer than a normal dye job in my hair, and tends to look more natural, whereas dye just fades and looks washed-out on me.

I was just thinking the same thing about fiftyfootbride...you are so cute and I love having a face to the name!!! I really hope that you are accepted as a BEE!! :)

My hair usually costs around $130 for highlights, coloring in between the highlights, and a trim. It's expensive, but I always feel SO much better after getting my hair done.

Do you have any salon schools near you? Seirously they are cheap!? and i've never had it messed up....the instructor checks off every step. Yeah it takes a *little* longer (i always get a girl ready to graduate within a year) but it's just like 1/3 cheaper and I can't say no. But now my fave girl has graduated. Sigh.

Oooh, I second what ejs4y8 said. When my friend was in school, I had it done at the Aveda Institute all the time. Aside from the scary waiver they make you sign at the beginning, it was nothing but a wonderful experience.

If the students stayed in school forever, I would still be going, but I like consistency too much.

My salon starts at $90 for a full foil. My hair is really thick and they usually charge me about $110 for all of the extra dye they have to mix for me.

hair styling schools are a great way to go if you dont want to fork over a lot of cash. you have a student doing your hair, but a teacher is always around watching like a hawk! but you have to be very trusting.

hair salons are just that salons, you pay for that word! hair colours are where the money is made, and it really also depends on hair length and thickness. some places charge per foil, others per hour. also you'll get charges add ifthey need to use more colour, more bleach, and toners. if you want a highlight look for cheaper just get a 1/2 head of foils instead of a full, or even just get a few in the tzone of the hair world.... along your part, and the sides by your face.

I recently moved to the east coast, and I have noticed the prices went WAY UP out here. In Colorado, I was usually paying aproximately $130 for a cut and highlight ( I have some seriously thick hair so it took 4 hours....I thought that $130 was a steal!) And out here I have been quoted $130 JUST FOR THE HIGHLIGHTS. Another $60 for the cut.

I understand paying $130 for highlights, it kind of is an art and you can really tell when somebody does or does not have experience. However. As far as a cut goes- I've never had a haircut that I thought was just outstanding. I've always been like ehhh after I get my haircut.

So I'd say it definitely depends on where you live! I envy the ladies that pay under $100!

I pay about $125 for all over foils and about $75 for touch ups (or what they call a "mohawk" - just the tops and sides). I only have to get an all over foil about once a year, unless i change my hair color.

Ask your stylist how much for just adding a few highlights - if you don't regularly do this, you'll want to start off slowly anyway and make sure you like it. If she could just do your crown and a few face framing, it'll probably be a LOT less.

@50, baracuda-ing is when somebody comes up and CHOMPS on your buttcheek. It leaves a big fat bruise. I'm not sure why people think it's funny. I've never had it happen to me; i'd probably kick someone in their squishy parts. But i was always amazed at the butt-chomping I'd see in public. Why you want your face near someone's booty is beyond me

The Aveda Institutes are REALLY posh and chic! I went to one in Seattle. Amazing!

At my salon, a cut and partial highlights runs $140.  I could try other places, but I really love my hairstylist AND she's a board certified hair colorist, so she really knows what she's doing. :)

The cost definitely varies by region, but in my neck of the woods, I've paid about $150-$180 (with tip) for cut, highlights and blowout.  I looooooove my hairdresser and she does amazing cuts and highlights-- totally worth it!  :)

i have a fabulous guy in DC and for a haircut & highlights it's around $120.  Way less expensive than what I used to pay in both Atlanta and in Michigan.

I've paid between $135 and $50 for highlights and cut.  If I go somewhere in Omaha it's more, if I go out by my house it's cheaper.

Okay so it's just me being frugal then. :P I'm a very thrift person, not stingy. It's like if I can save a buck I think of the other things I could purchase with the saved bucks. I'll go and pay the money and see what I think, I'm just not sure I love the idea of having to pay so much so often to have my roots done, that really adds up.
