I’m sure this question about “average pricing” for wedding photos has been addressed previously, but I’m wondering if any bees from CA can help me out with estimates! So far, the photographers I’ve researched have some whopping prices (at least, to me…). Many of the ones near us START at 3K. I know we live in an expensive area, though (Central Coast) so I’m trying to keep my expectations reasonable. What did other people find? Also, how many different photographers do people typically look into before they decide? I’ve contacted several on wedding wire, just trying to narrow it down based on the quality of their portfolios + a reasonable budget that fits into our overall budget! Thanks for your help!

Following as I am a California bride and I am at the stage of looking for photographers in California myself.
- Wedding: June 2014 - Gold Hill Gardens
Northern Central California here – pretty much any photographer I saw I liked started around $2500, but due to our schedule (needing a photographer for about 12 hours) most would have been in the $3500-4000 range. Luckily, I work with an amazing photographer (another teacher at my school), who came in around our budget ($1500). Good luck!

- Wedding: September 2012 - Southern California
I’m in Southern California & most of the reputable ones were at least $1,500 or closer to $2,000. Can you maybe contact cheaper photographers & ask about traveling costs? Or maybe [very cautiosuly] look through Craigslist & other classifieds for someone a little more budget-friendly. Good luck! It took us a couple months to research & find someone that fit in our price range, as well as, offer packages we were interested in.

Bay Area bride. My photography package is just about $4000.

DrD711: I don’t know if this is possible in your area, but in my homeotwn (LA) there are many ethnic photographers who charge much less. I got mine for my reception for $800 and they have a great portfolio!
Best of luck!

I would say 3-6K is average for a quality photographer. If you consider all the work that goes into shooting and what you get, it’s not expensive. It’s not one day of work. It isn’t cheap, but that’s the cost it seems…

Yep! SoCal here….. 6K for our package. It better be worth it!

Bay Area bride here – we found a photographer out of Sacramento to help keep our costs down and get more for our money. That said, we’re looking at about $4500-$5000 for our photos when it’s all said and done.
We contacted and/or met with maybe 4 or 5 photographers but ultimately made our decision based on her portfolio, yelp and other online reviews, and after seeing her work on a friend’s wedding. Best of luck!

I’m in Southern California (San Diego) and mine was around $1,500 for 5 hours on a weekday plus 2 hour engagement shoot and that includes a cd and full release of like 700ish pics. They are so expensive though mine is so talented and will travel. Let me know if you want her info 🙂 I haven’t taken any pics with her yet (we did our initial engagement pics before we found her) but her portfolio speaks for itself.

DrD711: Mine is $4,500 and that was one of the less expensive ones I found.

Also – FYI I found a lot of my vendors on weddingchicks.com because that site was pretty similar to what I wanted stylistically

We received a deal through our venue so we only paid $3500 (which is a steal in our area from what we found). Most quotes were quite high, with the lowest being $4000 for one photographer for 8 hours if we paid all cash (we’re close to LA). However, we love our photographer so much that we will be using her for every important event to come.

In Sacramento you can get $2-3K if you’re not going to throw in engagement shoot, extra hours, prints/album, etc (just digital images). Otherwise I’d say about $3-5K
