Try and sit with your friends. I work at a law firm as well, and that is what I always do. Also, booze always helps 😉

@eecuadrado:  Well, hopefully your co-worker can keep you entertained. I’m keeping my fingers crossed they don’t make us play any games this year. The only reason I go every year is to get my bonus.

@eecuadrado:  Yea, we get cash bonuses every year at the Christmas party. And yes, they make us play games. And then they give speaches. Or make new partner announcements. It is terribly boring.

@eecuadrado:  Ugh. I know how you feel. I am very socially awkward so unless we are talking work-related stuff (at which I’m a pro!), I freeze up and get nervous. I have found that standing by big and loud talkers helps – that way you can give off the look of participating by listening, but the spotlight (for lack of better term) is off you.

Someone said booze helps, but be careful with that. Some workplaces are pretty laidback when it comes to booze, but others are VERY judgey if you drink too much or can’t hold your liquor. I’ve had both – one where they pretty much gave all the 22 year old interns booze and fired those who couldn’t hold it, and another where the boss had us do shots in his office (all past jobs). So just tread carefully!

Try to have *some* fun though!

@eecuadrado:  That’s right – I saw that you were pregnant so I don’t know why I brought up the booze, but yes, I latched on to a very outgoing big talker when I was a newbie at one company during a social function. It definitely kept the pressure off me.

@eecuadrado:  Wow, that is awkward!  I’m usually a little uncomfortable at work functions too.  Is there anyone in your office that you feel is closest to a friend?  I always try to find that person and hang out with him or her.  If none of the co-workers I get along well with are going, then I usually don’t go either.  (BTW, congrats on your pregnancy!!)

@arsing89:  You can drink at holiday parties??  I work for the government so that is never allowed, even if we’re off-site.
