Yesterday we were watching Eat Pray Love and there's a scene at the beginning where Liz's (Julia Robert) friend Delia is changing her baby's diaper. Liz asked Delia when she knew she wanted a baby. I forget the answer but Delia said even before then she had "the box". She pulls it out from underneath her bed and it's like a huge storage box just full of baby stuff and clothes. She had started accumulating even before she was pregnant or TTC!
I thought that was hilarious! Turned to my husband and asked does that mean I can start buying stuff for our not yet existent baby??! Haha. He said just remember we have a small house and keep it under control. :D haha
So who here has a pseudo baby box even before they were pregnant or TTC?
I am SO hitting the sales/clearance racks in the baby department now!
I won't because I'm afraid I'll jinx myself! I'll buy baby stuff, then I'll find out we are unable to have a baby and I would be heartbroken having all that stuff around. So I'm going to wait until I'm pregnant before I buy anything baby-related.
I'd never thought of this but am loooving that you posted it! I can't work at the moment and will likely only have about 3-6months of employment under my belt when we TTC so budget is a concern... DH is going to act like he thinks I'm crazy, but I so know he'll be game... he has bigger baby fever than I do.
If you buy any great finds be sure to post! :)
I wouldn't, I guess I'm too superstitous. I'm 16 weeks pregnant now and still haven't allowed myself to buy anything during this pregnancy... I'm waiting until at least 20 weeks to think about it.
I was pregnant before and miscarried, and I had bought some things for the baby (I cross stitched a blanket and some bibs, and bought my husband a father's day gift of a onesie with his favorite football team on it). I hated having those things around after I found out I miscarried, I made him put them in a box and hide it. I still don't know where it is or what the box looks like. I guess it's extra scary after you've already lost a baby though.
there's a pack'n play set up in our living room right now, and we don't have kids yet! it's for when our goddaughter or other people visit us. whenever i think to go take it down, the cat is sleeping in it! lol, our baby=) my ex boyfriend's sister is one of my best friends, and when he and i were still together, i used to watch his niece/her daughter at our house 3 days a wk while she worked, so i have stuff from her that i'll use when we start a family. i would be wary of buying clothes before hand, people give you ridiculous amounts of tiny clothes that babies get to wear like once before outgrowing them. but i don't see anything wrong with stocking up on certain items that you know you will use, that people don't enjoy gifting, won't go bad, and are at a good price.
I have! Before our wedding my husband and I went back and forth about even wanting kids, but after the wedding he got major, major baby fever. I got him a onezie as part of his birthday gift, half as a “joke” gift and half as a “ok, I’m on board with TTC soon” sign/gift.
So far, I’ve only bought 2 items, both off Etsy. I don’t want to jinx myself, but using my Etsy $ (I sell on Etsy too, so have cash in my PayPal fund), isn’t the same as using my “real money” lol – we can justify anything, right?! ;-)
Here are the 2 items, they are awesome!

Cashmere cat shaped baby rattle/toy:

I don’t plan to buying much before we start TTC because our baby will be the first grandbaby on both sides – so he/she will be spoiled from the moment they are conceived!
Our law school is selling little onesies and toddler clothes this year, which doesn't happen often, so I know of at least a few girls who will have "the box" hidden and tucked away. If all else fails, I can tell FI the stuff he stumbles across is something I'm holding for 'friend x' so her hubby/FI doesn't get nervous...hehe.
Haha, I haven't! But. it wouldn't surprise me if my Mom does. She is so desperate to have a grandchild that I could see her dressing up a stuffed animal and carrying that around, LOL.
@gabriellereese, OMG i want that cashmere rattle! EFFING CUTE
I have an owl pillow I bought that it is a closet. I collect owl stuff, so it's not that weird. If i came across something unique and cute, I'd probably pick it up, but I would not go overboard. I haven't bought anything specific for a baby yet. I really wish I'd bought a onesie from my university before they changed their name. Now i can't find SQUAT with the name on it that i actually graduated with!! I get my kicks buying stuff for my friends. I'm taking a 6-week knitting class, so I'm sure baby stuff will fall off my needles between making baby props (i have 3 newborn hats! love them!) and sending gifts to my friends or just stockpiling them
I guess I'm not a overly superstitious person by nature so the thought of having baby items before being pregnant doesn't bother me. But I can definitely see feeling differently if I had a miscarriage. :(
My mom's back in China right now for 2 months and they have the softest fleece baby blankets there. And they are HUGE, almost twice the size of most baby fleece blankets here. They are thick, think Turkish fleece blankets, and super soft. So I've asked her to bring back one or two unisex ones. :)
I'm not saying I'm going to go overboard and buy cribs and such (altho if I see something on a ridiculous clearance sale I'm not sure I could pass it up knowing I might need it soon). Just small cute stuff that I can pick up for under $5 or so. :P
I'm itching to take a knitting class as well! I took it up once when I was in HS and it was a epic fail! But I've always been interested!
@ejs4y8: I collect owl stuff too!! EEEEK. I totally want to deck out a nursery in owl stuff, not because owls are hip now but because I have loved owls for as long as I can remember!
FI and I have a few things, we have a onesie a few hats and we have had a few pair of shoes. I love little newborn shoes and socks
I have yet to buy anything for a baby. However, I do have lots of things picked out that I want to buy. I am thinking about maybe picking up some things on clearance here or there due to budgeting needs but nothing over the top.
Now that we are pregnant I have started picking up a few things.
We already had a pack and play, a high chair, and a play kitchen (one of those big plastic ones). My IL's were getting rid of it all and knew we would need it in a few years or would have friends with kids and it would be helpful to have around the house.
Way too superstitious to buy anything before getting pregnant or even during the first trimester!
We've started accumulating baby equipment (car seats, double stroller) because there are two little peanuts growing in there but I am not going to buy any clothes or personal items for the babies for another few weeks - I'm 22 weeks and 3 days now. I have started a document with shopping/furniture and decorating ideas but I wouldn't be comfortable buying anything right now.
@regberadaisy, I can knit and purl, but my scarves look like shit! I really need someone to show me. Not youtube, haha.
@panterapeach, ME TOO! As soon as owls got popular I banged my head against a desk.
I am far too superstitious to buy anything, though I have been very tempted!
Not yet... but I probably will be once we start trying to conceive! :)
I have, however, made out a list of cute mommy/baby Halloween costumes for when I finally take him/her trick-or-treating (like Alice in Wonderland and a baby rabbit, a ringmaster and a baby lion, etc.).
Why is it bad luck?
Is it like it's bad luck if a black cat crosses your path?
Don't walk under a ladder?
*shrugs* I don't know, to me I've never heard of this superstition/old wives tale.
My mom has been buying me baby things since college. She's been wanting to be a grandma for a while now! Before pregnancy, she's stored up one of those grocery cart protectors, a few onesies, and some baby books. She also got a blanket and little cowboy boots. Once I announced it, she went nuts. I've had to reign her in a little, but I'm pretty sure I'll never have to buy my child any clothing thanks to her!
In my family we don't even have baby showers - 90% of any baby-related purchases take place after baby has arrived. I don't know if it's 'bad luck' as much as superstition. More of a 'better safe than sorry' as opposed to a tradition that traces back somewhere. My family is Irish and Italian and there are families within our extended family (of both ethnicities) that have had baby showers over the years but for the most part among aunts and cousins there have hardly been any.
I'm not a paranoid person but I've heard of stories where a pregnancy went to full term and something awful happened and the couple had to come home to a fully finished nursery full of baby paraphernalia and baby clothes - I know I wouldn't be able to handle that so I'll stick with the superstition. And I'm perfectly happy being superstitious when it comes to babies even if I might not buy into a gazillion other superstitions!
I have purchased one baby thing for myself. It was a Valentine's onsie from Old Navy last year with a picture of a wrestler type man on it and it said "World Champion Heartbreaker". Since FI wrestles, I thought it was just too cute NOT to buy (and it was on sale for $1.99). Other than that, I have a few things that I had bought for friends that didn't wind up working, so I held on to them. And, the first time after I got engaged that I saw my mom, she handed me a hand knit baby sweater that she had picked up at a yard sale.
I don't see anything wrong with it, I don't really believe that it's bad luck or anything.
SIL gave us their bassinet when they were done having kids. Her last is 9 months old. We took it apart and put it in our storage room. I also have a few minor things put away. A few really cute baby outfits with bigs on them (I love pigs!), plus a couple Christmas bibs I got on sale after Christmas this year, and a few other little things. Nothing major.
I love elephants and about 6 years ago I saw the cutest lamp that I thought would be perfect in a nursery. I've had it on a shelf in my closet ever since. I guess (I hope) I can pull it out in a few months since I'm pregnant now.
It never occured to me that I wouldn't be a mom someday, naturally or otherwise, so I didn't overthink it or get too superstitious about it. Besides, it was only $20 so if I never used it, no real harm done.
I only have one thing...I would never buy anything like baby furniture, but I found this onesie that said "Daddy's Girl....he loves the Cowboys too!" with the logo. It was too cute to pass up. And I'm happy I got it because they don't have it in their shop any more. I don't think it's a jinx at all...if we don't have a girl I'll give it to one of his brother's or friend's who do. No harm, no foul
I have a box! Haha, it isn't crazy full. We have a couple outfits (in larger sizes since you get overloaded generally) that have a VW bus on them somewhere since DH loves them. I also have a couple books that my mum was going to donate. I don't think it is superstitious because even if we cannot conceive naturally (though difficult) we would look into adoption. We shall have a family somehow! :)
Soooo my husband and I aren't going to be TTC until June, but we already have the nursery set up...we didn't buy anything but a quilt and a baby mattress, it was mostly stuff we had on hand....and a coworker gave us a brand new crib and changing table just because she knows we'll be trying soon.
I think baby stuff is so cute sometimes I want to buy it- but we aren't planning to stop trying not to for a few years. I want to go to graduate school before I "retire" to my house for a year. Sorry- I sound like a wet blanket- anyway, I am often tempted when I see a good deal or something adorable- but I am going to wait. :)
We have just one toy. It's a little stuffed dog that winds up and plays Brahm's Lullabye. It's super cute. DH was on board with it when I bought it. Now, months later, I realize I probably shouldn't have because it's just kind of collecting dust at the moment, but I do like it. It would work for a boy or a girl. Sometimes I see super cute clothes on sale that I'm tempted to buy, but clothes aren't as unisex so I haven't gone that far.
I must confess....I am only 10 weeks (well, tomorrow I will be) and we have already started to purchase small things. There was a huge sale in the baby section of a store near us recently so we bought a few onesies. We've also purchased a few soothers (buy 1 get 1 free), and some diapers and wipes (again, both on sale). I wouldn't pay regular price for anything right now, but I don't think it hurts to start buying a few things. I do realize the superstition behind it, the way I see it is that if (God forbid) anything does happen, I have so many friends who are pregnant right now that I will consider myself lucky to have already gotten a head start on their shower gifts. What I have bought certainly won't go to waste! My original plan was only to buy diapers (I had a friend suggest to buy one box a month during your pregnancy to help ease the load in the beginning....which I thought was brilliant)! So call me crazy, but I will continue to look for the deals and buy the smaller stuff :)
Call me crazy but I definitely did this. My mom bought me a crib almost a year ago that she found on SUPER SUPER sale, too good to pass up. Over the last few months I've picked up stuff that I find on good deals like onesies and bedding. It doesn't hurt to be prepared.
*raises hand*
My husband warned me that I might be jinxing us, but before we were TTC I bought some stuff and stored in in a tupperware container. I think once the baby fever hit and I knew I wanted to start trying some of the nesting instinct kicked in too!
Never heard of this before, although I have seen some really cute things on sale and I have been tempted to buy it but knew if the DH found out, he would think I was crazy or something. haha.
As for jinxing it, I'm not sure if that's the reason. If anyone was getting rid of baby items and they were in good condition, I would take it. DH would probably yell at me because we don't really have room for it.
I have seen some cute santa or halloween costumes that I really really wanted to buy. I think I'll hold off til I get pregnant because I don't know what gender my kids will be.
I could see how this would be tempting- especially when I can easily get lost on Etsy or other online shops window-shopping for a hour (or three).
I've never bought anything, and I don't think I will - not because I'm supersitutious, but because I'm so damn cheap! I mean, what if I buy something now and then when its time for baby I change my mind/don't like it anymore? I tend to change my mind a lot, and thus buying something would likely be a waste of money!
I am way too afraid to jinx myself. Other people have started to buy us stuff, but my husband and I wont allow ourselves to buy anything until we know at 20 weeks that everything is still ok and we know for certain that its a boy or girl.
I have a few things (onsies, hats, and bibs) that I bought on super sale, thinking I could give them away, but later decided I would rather keep, and some maternity clothes that a friend gave me knowing we were planning on TTC soon (they were either new or in awesome condition, and she wanted to give them to someone she knows, so they were too good for me to pass up. I don't think it is jinxing, and they are in a rubbermaid box tucked away in the spare closet, so I don't feel like they are putting pressure on me!
Well, I haven't done this, but my future SIL has an entire baby room in her home fully decorated for a baby. The wall is yellow and she has it decorated in Noah's Ark so it can go for a baby girl as well as a baby boy. She has a changing table, car seats, stoller, cute bibs with "I'm a Miracle" on them --because she has been trying for some time and when her little precious gets here he or she will be a "Wonderful Blessing".
She pretty much finds things on sale from time to time and puts it in the baby room. I am sooo praying that God blesses her to get pregnant soon so she can put that room to work. I'm ready for a new baby in my soon-to-be family.
I love the idea. Before my SO and I marry I have prepared by purchasing things on sale I think we could use....griddle, towels, etc. Before my wedding... I have found pics of dresses I like, put colors together, and planned a nice location... so in my opinion THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH PLANNING AHEAD.
I've collected a few things but only have bought one item...a little pair of Gum Boots that look like little firefighter boots so how could I say no? Besides we are going to start TTC in just a few short months :)
haha. I really need to get in gear and catch up with you ladies!
We have absolutely NO room at our house so unless we found "furniture" at ridiculous 90% off or something won't be buying any of that.
hehe. My ILs said they want to buy us the crib so my mother in law and I were like well if we find something we like at super super sale we just have to get it! hehe.
