I see a lot of posts asking about what stuff to buy and I know there are a ton of choices out there. So I figured I would spend a few minutes while my little bundle is napping to call out some of my absolute favorite items so far into being a Mom. Note that DD is only 6 weeks old, so things can always change/adapt.
#1: My Brest Friend – I seriously could not survive breastfeeding without this thing. I know people like the Boppy, but I got that one as a gift as well and I still haven’t figured out how to use it. The Brest Friend gives a steady surface both for your knees and for the little one to rest on. It is a back and life saver.
#2: Swaddling Stuff – the hospital blankets are awesome so we stole two of those, but obviously you need more. The Target brand receiving blankets (Circo) most resemble the hospital receving blankets and thus IMO are the best for night swaddling. The more stretchy blankets (like Aiden and Anais) are nice as cover ups when you are walking or for wrapping her in while you are holding her, but they don’t give nearly as tight a swaddle.
Second Runner Up is the Halo Sleep Sack. DD has started to kick herself out of the swaddle. The sleep sack lets me wrap her body/arms but let her feet kick free within the sack. It makes a big difference.
#3 Breast Pump. Boy there is a lot of info out there on breast pumps. I bought the Ameda Pump in Style and I love it. I will say that I have pumped A LOT because of problems with my preemie breastfeeding and I started with the Medela Hospital Rental. It worked just fine, but IMO is harder to clean than the Ameda brand (google the difference between open and closed systems). That alone makes me happy I went with the Ameda. Plus the tote it comes with is pretty nice.
#4 Moby Wrap. LOVE LOVE LOVE. It takes a few tries to get the wrap right (you want to wrap the baby tighter than you think and make sure her head is at “kissable level”) but once you do it is a lifesaver – allows you to have two hands for doing things like the dishes or laundry or just typing an email while your newborn refuses to be put down. Plus you can do skin-to-skin time in it really easily. There are other options for brands, but Moby is working really well.
#5 Car Seat – Our Chicco KeyFit is amazing. It is a breeze (snap in and snap out) to get in and out of the base and also pretty simple to strap in the old fashioned way (using seat belts) if you are using a different car. The infant padding it comes with also fits quite well. We also bought the KeyFit Caddy as our “stroller” until DD grows out of the car seat and we love that even more than the carseat. It’s super easy to fold/unfold and just snaps in and out. It has a huge basket and is really easy/smooth to drive. Only downside is ultimately we will need to get a new stroller when she grows out of the carseat, but by then we will know a lot better what we are doing and therefore what we would be looking for in a stroller.
#6 My iPad and Amazon Prime or Netflix Subscription – you spend lonnnggggg hours breastfeeding, burping, calming and holding. I set up my iPad in the nursery so I can rock her in the chair but still can watch TV.
