FI and I are planning to TTC right after our wedding. This weekend we have been tossing around baby names just for fun since we still have a few months before we even TTC. I’m not telling family and friends we are TTC or thinking up baby names so I figure some opinions here would be good.
We both love the name Cara for a baby girl, and I’m pretty sure if we ever have a daughter that will be her name.
We can’t agree on many boy names, FI is so picky. One name he suggested this weekend was Vance, we might call him Van. I actually really like the name after thinking on it, I didn’t the first time I heard it. I just am worried a lot of people will be like me and not like it right away. I like it because it’s unique without being really strange. Opinions on the name? I can’t think of any good middle names for it either, any suggestions?
I’m a little concerned if we have a girl first then a boy our children end up being Cara and Van…like Caravan. Will anybody else make that connection or is it just me? Haha.

i put vance in the baby name genie (fun website if you’ve never played with it! http://www.babynamegenie.com/ ) is it gave me: Vance Brody, which is kinda cute.
‘caravan’! that is funny=P

I love that name!!! I don’t know if you have ever watched the show Reba on Lifetime, but one of the main people on there is a guy named Van. And he’s hot. So I like that name!!! =)

@ MrsEtoBe- That’s funny that it brought up Vance Brody because Brody is one of the other names my FI likes that I wasn’t sure about. I kind of do like it as a middle name though!

I might make the “Caravan” connection, but I doubt most kids would, if that’s a concern for you–do kids even know what caravans are these days? 😉
FWIW, I think Vance/Van is a super cute name, but I like Vance so much I don’t think I would want to shorten it! Also–are you thinking Cara pronounced “CARE-uh” or “CAR-uh”? If you like the second pronounciation, that would avoid the “caravan” thing.

It would be Care-uh. I don’t like the other way. The other way it would sound like Car-(uh) and van to me. I’m glad to hear some of you like the name Vance though. I’ve never met a child with that name so in that way it seems unusual but at the same time it doesn’t seem way out there.
I am hoping to convince FI that if we have a girl that Cara should have a full name that is Caralee because I LOVE that name. He’s not sure which is fine, plenty of time to decide. Otherwise we might just do Lee as a middle name and just call her Cara Lee sometimes as a nickname/pet-name.

I think Vance is a really good name! I think it’s pretty original and easy to pronounce (which is awesome…as a sub I hate crazy names, although I’m pretty sure I’m gonna stick my future daughter with one anyway haha). Cara is really sweet too, although if you don’t like the CAR-uh pronunciation you’re probably going to hear it a lot and have to correct lots of people.

I don’t think you should name your child “van” it sounds more like an object then a name. Vance yes but no way to “Van”. Just as I wouldn’t name my kid apple.. You can still have a unique name just not so strange
I’m going to name my future girls: Audrina, Rosalie, Kourtney, And Ruby
Boys: Michael, Brandon, KC, & Sean

I would make the connection. I don’t know if kids would, but I do think other adults will realize it. Consider how often children get introduced or called by name together. “These are my children, Cara and Van…” Or when they are out in the yard playing and you want them to come in “Cara! Van! It’s time for dinner!” I would probably pick which I love more and relegate the other to a middle name or drop it.

My DH’s Great grandfathers name was Van (He just passed away this summer at 93) and we LOVE the name Van/Vance!!! I hope we can use it in out future! =-)
I dont think that connection will be made.
It is kinda funny because on the show Reba, her one daughter is Kera and the SIL is Van.
ETA: you could always use the boys name first too. Say “Van! Cara!”

I really like the name Van, although I did immediately think of the show Reba. I wouldn’t have made the Caravan connection, though. I think you should use it if you love it!

my friends name is Kara and her sister is Mel- sounds like caramel. when i pointed it out to her she said she had never thought of that. so i doubt anyone else will think of caravan
