My sister is having her first baby in June and I’m trying to plan her shower. She wants it big and co-ed. What are your thoughts on a ‘Bun in the Oven’ theme?
I thought we could have a lunchmeat platter (you know, with buns to put the meat on), cinnamon buns in a paper bag with an oven sticker on it as favors, and cinnamon bun-flavored/themed game prizes (i.e. cinnabun lip gloss, scented candles, I even found a Cathy comic collection called “Abs of Steel, Buns of Cinnamon” or something like that.)
Do you guys have any other ideas? I’m thinking the decor will be blue plaid and it will have almost a picnic-feel. Oh, and she’s having a boy.

I think the “Bun in the Oven” theme could be cute, but I’m not really sure how you would decorate with that (not that you have to decorate to fit a specific theme, I just think it makes it easier). I love the website http://www.ontobaby.com… they have lots of super cute baby shower ideas… maybe look around a little more, and if you don’t find anything else you like, stick with the Bun in the Oven theme?

I like the idea but I think I would do more of a bakery theme if the idea was “bun in the oven”. That seems more cohesive to me than sandwiches and cinnamon buns:) But it is a co-ed shower so a cute idea could be a bbq with hamburger “buns” lol. I also love on to baby! It’s made by the wedding chicks girls and it’s great!

I don’t want to sound harsh but I think what you’re describing is taking the theme and the analogy a bit too far. It sounds like it could end up a bit cheesy. Sorry! 🙁

@ItsPronounced_ABear: Dont forget that pregnant women can’t have lunch meat that hasn’t been heated up due to bacteria concerns.
I would just keep it simple “Its a boy”. The bun in the oven theme seems like it will be a stretch to fit in.

@futuremrsrichardson: Wow, thank you so much. I totally didn’t know that about lunch meat…

I think it’s a super cute idea! I saw a bun in the oven cake for a baby shower on Pinterest. You could also do chicken salad or tuna salad to go on your buns. Or, you could have pulled pork or beef or something. That seems kinda picnic-y to me. You don’t have to decorate with buns to get the idea across. You could make blue tissue paper pompoms, or make bunting with blue and white fabric. Ckeck out the website Kara’s party ideas. They have all kinds of different party ideas.
Your theme is way more original than the typical baby shower, I would go for it!

@35thannidaughter: Thanks! It seems like most people don’t really like it, but I thought it was unique too. I also saw a pic of a cinnamon bun cake and thought it was cute.

These are the ones I saw on Pinterest. Cute, right?!
Also, I am super impressed with myself for figuring out how to get those pics on here.

It sounds cute, but if the baby is the bun in the oven and you’re all eating buns…I don’t know, I think I’m overthinking it. The picnic-y aspect to the theme sounds great!

I guess at the end of the day, it would be easiest if I could just ASK my sister what she thought, since it’s her opinion that matters. But we’re so big on surprises in our family… I wouldn’t want to ruin it. ::sigh::
As they say, 1st-World problems, right?

One of my good friends had the most awesome shower thrown for her, but it was kind of untraditional.
It was actually a shower for men and women, and they had tons of food, raffle tickets for prizes, and games that aren’t creepy like the poopy diaper game. People brought tons of gifts and everyone just sat out in their garage on patio chairs and in the driveway under tents and had a great time! Men brought cases of beer and cases of diapers and the women stayed a little more traditional. It was a really fun way to get everyone involved without forcing a bunch of men to coo over little baby outfits lol.
Would she (and maybe her DH) be up for something a little outside the box like that?
