I would just put in on the website somewhere.

It all depends on how well word of mouth works with your guests. It seems like the best option would be to leave the invitation wording as it is, but put something up on the website. Then tell everyone to spread the word about grass so people don’t wear skinny heels. And maybe provide some flip flops for people who don’t wear appropriate shoes?

I would list on the invitation that it’s in a backyard. Reading it as is, I’d assume it’s indoors.

So much stock is placed on information getting out via word-of-mouth and websites, when I find that’s not actually the case. If I didn’t know any of the wedding party or parents or didn’t take the time to look at websites (which I admit, I probably wouldn’t), I’d never know.

How about “in the backyard of the home of…” or something like that.

I think the wording you have is just fine. As a guest, I don’t expect to find that information on an invitation – what difference does it make? If this really matters to someone, they’ll find out on their own whether it’s inside or outside.

From the original wording I would think the reception is indoors also. I say use all three methods —  change the invite, the website, and spread the word. Cover all of your bases.

I’d put it on the invite.  It makes a big difference to me – I’m going to dress differently for a backyard reception than I would for an indoor reception

rather than “backyard” you could use the word “garden”

Mine (both ceremony and reception) is in a backyard, and the final two lines of my invite were:

Reception to follow

Lawn-friendly shoes are suggested

I’ve gotten so many thanks from women attending about the shoe warning!

@nolabee39:   I would wear lower shoes, probably bring a cardigan or jacket (what’s the usual temp outside in March in New Orleans?) that I would plan on wearing the entire time.   Not a regular coat that I’d be removing once I got to an inside venue
