i.love.backyard weddings!! my mom unfortunately sold her house on 4 acres so my dream is gone lol (perhaps that's why i wanted a b&b wedding for that same hometime feel)... I probably say candles, luminaries, and tents, what time of the day are y'all going for?
We're doing a park reception, so my parents don't have to deal with landscaping/worrying about enough space and bathrooms and such. I think I'm decorating in the same way as if it WERE in my parents' backyard, though... twinkle lights, tissue paper pom poms, mason jars, kraft paper runners, family-style seating. This is one of my favorite inspiration events (wasn't a wedding, but a backyard party): http://www.stylemepretty.com/2009/10/09/backyard-party-by-jessamyn-harris/
@crebre: Four acres would be awesome! Unfortunately, we would have about a half acre to work with on a property filled with trees, so no go on the tents, haha.
@jduck: Ooh, gorgeous pics! I love the use of vintage glass. :)
@minutiae: mom has about 1/2 an acre now, but i wouldn't be comfy with my dad's family there etc (they have been divorced for about 23 years, although they are friendly, that just wouldn't be comfy for my stepdad and mom i don't think). How about stringing lights?
this reminds me of your gazebo

love this...
dunno how they did it but I'm loving it!!

im doing my moulin rouge wedding in my inlaws back yard... we are putting a tent and decorating with hanging lanterns thats looks like stars... our centerpieces will be maroccan lanterns and we are using rectangular tables for a more intimate wedding... we are planning a romantic evening but also fun
love the paper kraft runner idea
ok for those of you who are doing backyard or who have done backyard weddings, are you doing it at the same house a lot of out of town guests will be staying at? How are you combatting the getting ready with so many people in one place issue? we're doing the wedding in my mum's backyard about 100 people size is fine it's nice and roomy back there plus people will be minlging inside and outside BUT we're having guests at her house as well as getting ready there. The wedding will start at 7 and we're preping everything the day before so it should be ok but I'm wanting to hear tips from people who've been through before?
We had a morning ceremony followed by a really mellow luncheon. Then we had an afterparty at our house that night. I consider the party our "reception." It was pretty rustic... but fun was had by all. We rented long tables and chairs for the back yard and set out games, munchies and there was plenty of booze. Our friends brought up their karaoke stuff so that was going on inside. We also had the ipod going outside. We set up tiki torches and christmas lights outside as well. People seemed to have a really good time, there was impromtu dancing and the karaoke got really wild...
@Cricket: I hadn't planned on housing anyone but people from the bridal party, actually. Most guests live in the area. How many are you having over? Are there hotels or other relatives nearby you could direct them to?
@northernazbride: That sounds like a lot of fun! Karaoke would be awesome at a wedding, haha.
We're having an outdoor wedding and reception. = ) FSIL's wedding was in the same place ours will be. I didn't take as many pics as I thought, though. I have the DJ tent, one of the table settings, part of the ceremony set up, sand table, our uncle setting up the cupcakes, and a picture of our gazebo (that FI's dad built on a trailer then brought to the location)!
Hmmm...not all of them are showing, but they work if you click the links. = ) I think FSIL's wedding was really nice!
I love all the pictures so far!
We have a lot ouf in town guests that our oot guests can stay with, so that's a plus. I think a few people will be staying at FBIL's place (where the wedding is) but it's family and we'll be gone most of the day getting ready so I don't mind.
@Minutiae we will be staying there plus a few members of the bridal party not much when you consider I grew up there as the 2nd of 7 kids (my older brother lived in the UK most of the time so it was mostly the 6 of us). We managed then, there are 2 bathrooms and I figure if we have plenty of mirrors on hand we can use those and only use the bathrooms to actually shower. (that's how it was when we were kids and it worked). I was just curious if anyone else had hit this problem.

Who's planning on having a backyard reception? Did you have a backyard reception (and do you have pics? :D)? Any tips or cool decorating ideas? I'm looking for inspiration! It's very likely my SO and I will have a backyard reception due to cost reasons.
One of my favorite backyard wedding/receptions is this one from young house love. I love the ten cent lemons in the $8 galvinized tin filled with $2 ice, haha.
When I first started thinking about having the reception at home, the backyard looked like this. And this. It looks much better now, but not until I paid my wages in blood, sweat, and calamine lotion, with plenty more work to come.
My tip for anyone who's landscaping their site: get rid of weeds FAR IN ADVANCE of the wedding date. And don't use fabric gloves during the hottest months of the year. Because you may end up like me and get a poison ivy rash all over your arms, stomach, legs, and hands. In-between-fingers poison ivy is an agony I wish on no one. Plus I have scars now that need time to fade. Yeah, I'm a genius.
