Whew. So we just got back from out honeymoon yesterday…but it was really bad. We went to Dreams Punta Cana Resort and Spa in the Dominican Republic.
We got to the airport and expedia messed up the shuttle that we had already paid for so it took a while but we left…it took an hour to get to the resort and through that one hour drive, we saw complete poverty. We felt horrible. There we’re 5-8 year olds flipping off our shuttle, homes that were falling apart, dead dogs all over the road. It was just really sad and made us feel guilty for going to a resort.
It rained the whole time and there was heavy storms/humidy. Aparrently June is one of the worst months to go accept for hurricane season. We thought the stormy weather was kind of fun and so we cuddled up in our hotel room…but the room was really moldy (I have an extreme allergy to mold, more than most people it seems) and infested with bugs. The entire bathroom wall was COVERED in bugs. We ordered room service–DH was so hungry he ate almost all of his burger until he looked down and it was completely raw.
I got food poisoning. The entire time I was really sick which at first I thought I was pregnant…but no, it was just really bad food.
DH lost his ring in the ocean 🙁 I almost cried. I thought he would have it forever.
Our showers smelt like sewer water…
Our shuttle from the resort to the airport never came so we almost missed our flight. And we had to pay $100 for the scariest cab ride of our lives.
We did get a few cute photos though so I will share those. I did love spending time away with DH but I think we enjoyed the plane ride more than the actual stay at the resort. We were able to take the photos before I got sick/before he lost his ring/before it started pooring rain.
But I don’t think we’ll ever go back to the Dominican Republic again 🙁 I think the rest of the details wouldn’t have mattered if I didn’t get sick and if DH didn’t lose his wedding band though

This story is so tragic, but you look like you are having so much fun in your photos- lol! At least you got some good photo ops out of the trip, right? 🙂 That third one down of you guys on the beach is GORGEOUS!

OMGosh!!!! That’s a terrible story. =(
Your pics are AMAZING though… I guess if nothing else atleast you got those out of it?
UGH for bad trips!!!!!!!!!

That sucks! Sorry you had a bad honeymoon 🙁
About the poverty and seeing the kids… I feel this way too but at the same time if people stopped going to these places there would be even worse poverty since so many of them rely on tourism. I just remember to always treat everyone I meet with extreme kindness (and nice tips for those who provide a service!).
I love the colours in that second photo!
ETA: I went to Cuba years ago with my mom and we stayed at the worst resort ever. Our room was a lot like yours, moldy, bugs etc. The shower was so NASTY and moldy that it was black in patches.

You have stunning pictures for a terrible trip. Have you contacted the resort at all to let them know about your complaints? If I were you, I would mail off a letter immediately.

Wow, you don’t expect your first trial as a married couple to be the honeymoon! Glad you are safely home and your photos are gorgeous 🙂 Did you schedule a photo shoot during your trip? What a fun idea…

Wow, I am so sorry you went through all of that. I felt so bad for you while reading your story. I hope other brides read this that are planning that trip, too. On another note, you look beaaaaautiful in your pics.
P.S. I hope you left a bad review for that hotel. That’s awful.

@Ms. Martian: True but it really broke my heart. I feel like we would have had more fun helping them out in some way…the workers there were amazing. Other than a couple cooks but its all good… I think
I just hope its food poisoning any not something worse, Giardia maybe? My mom is convinced I’m pregnant. I’m going to see the doctor monday.
@Pupperoni: Yeah I’m definitely going to write a strongly worded letter…
I was really surprised because trip advisor didn’t have that bad of reviews

Sorry to hear about your horrible experience, you must be so dissapointed. On the positive side – you have some fabulous pictures, and any future trips you guys take have to be better!!!
I think in a few months, or on your one year anniversary you should get to do a “do over” honeymoon!

Yikes! We were considering that resort but went with a cruise instead. I’m sorry your HM sucked. I agree with Miss Smurf, you should totally get a do over.
Amazing pictures though!

Yes, the Caribbean islands are typically extremely poor. To make matters worse, the all-inclusive resorts are typically US or European-owned, with all that money people spend to stay there going back to a foreign country instead of helping out the local population. The jobs that do go to the locals tend to be the shockingly low-paid maid and server positions…which hardly lift the general population out of poverty.
A great documentary: “Life and Debt in Jamaica”.
The way that developed countries take advantage of the Carribean is pretty sickening, and the lack of knowledge most tourists have about the situation is just heartbreaking. We could be spending the money in much more effective ways t help the locals instead of funneling that money right back home!
