I was reading on the ‘waiting’ section about a really romantic proposal…they went out to dinner, it happened by a harbour, he’d picked her favourite ring…etc
And I got to thinking of mine. Lordy, it was rubbish. We were away in May 2010 with a group of friends for a convention both FI and myself had organised (yes, we are sci-fi geeks) FI got drunk the first night and let slip that he’d originally planned to take me to Paris for my birthday in the August and propose by the Effiel Tower…which would have had special meaning for me, as I’m half French!
But unfortunately, due to my health problems making it impossible for me to work for the best part of the year before, he just couldn’t afford it. Bummer.
So the next day we have a lovely picnic with friends, and yes, the beer was flowing again…as we were walking back to the hotel, on our own, by the Milleninum Centre in Cardiff, I tipsily tell him he may as well do it here…he gets down on one knee, asks, I say yes, and that’s it. No ring, he’s completely broke and can’t even afford CZ.
I sober up and regret the whole thing – apart from saying yes, of course! Being in my early 40s, to get totally hung up about it seems a bit immature, but when I read a nice one, I can’t help feeling a little pang…
Anyone else have a pretty poor proposal?

Aww, I know we all want the perfect fairy tale proposal stories but the important thing is that you get to marry the man you love!
You could always propose back to him and make it special!

In my case…it was Valentine’s day, and I had been working with some foster children that were due to go back to their ex-carer – I had been told they were leaving at 6pm, so planned to go there that afternoon to spend time with them (pretty tearful, because I’d been working with them intensely for ages). At about 8.30am, my partner drove to his hometown to get me a Valentine’s day present. His hometown is about an hour away and, at 10am, I got a phone call from work saying the kids were leaving at 1pm, instead of 6.
I started panicking and getting ready to go see them (I was waiting for my partner, because he worked with these kids too), so at about 11am, I was waiting impatiently out the front of the house for him to pull up so we could go (all thoughts of the present were gone from my mind).
Anyway, just after 11, my partner gets home, insists on going inside to “hide the present.” I basically follow him inside saying “Just give it to me now and let’s go!” So he turned around, handed me a small box, and said “Fine then, here’s your present.” We then stood there in awkward silence for several minutes until he realised he had to tell me it was an engagement ring. I hugged him, said “Awesome, now let’s go.” I didn’t fully realise I was engaged until about 2 hours later!

Yeah, my business travel ruined my proposal. Against my better judgement, I traveled two weeks before Christmas for work -given the increased air traffic volume and potential weather fiascos, I generally try to avoid airline travel after December 10th. Anyway, ended up traveling and getting stuck due to weather in Ohio for 2 days. Finally, after 24 hours in the airport, and totally unbelievable set of challenges, i finally made it home totally exhausted. FH met me at the airport bc I was too tired to drive safely and gave me the 2 day old roses and the ring which was intended to be given at a very planned out, 5 star experience. Oh well. The next day, he took me to the art museum we both love and got down on one knee for the “official” proposal. How very… us, that it got botched because of business travel – we both travel extensively for work. Very sweet that he adjusted without complaint! And let me say that the free trips we get because of frequent flier miles make up for it!
