Put a stop payment on the check you sent her and find a new baker! Of course, call, email, even stop by her place to tell her that you will no longer be using her as your baker!
With so little time left, I would do as Rosie has advised.
Destination wedding, I can't stop by. I did visit her when I was in the area a couple weeks ago and she seemed fine.
If she is not taking any orders currently she must be pretty booked full with clients. Since your wedding is 5 weeks away she is probably focusing on weddings in the next week or two. Do you already have your design and flavors? If so Id say you are fine, theres really nothing else for them to do until its time to bake your cake.
If you dont have the details figured out, Id try again through the week to get ahold of her (by calling). If you talk to her, give her a chance to explain why she hasnt called you back and express your concerns. If you arent comfortable after that, inform her that you will be finding another baker and put a stop payment on the check.
Is there someone at the destination that could help you find out what happened with her?? like someone at the hotel maybe??
She replied to our phone call where we said we'd have to go elsewhere. She said she had a family emergency and would get back to us soon...
and she did. She emailed us today and told us she's bailing. Pissed!
At least... she told you, I guess, and never cashed the check (right?). That still really stinks though!

Our cake baker is missing in action. She hasn't returned emails or calls for at least a week. We sent her a deposit check a couple weeks ago, she never cashed it.
All I've gotten for a response was an automated email reply that says she's not taking orders currently.
So... wedding is in 5 weeks. What do I do?
