@sagbride: What is your price point?
I'd highly recommend Gabriella (at 14th st and 9th ave). It's a smaller shop but they have lots of dresses. Here's one I tried on there that fits what you want (it has a hoop skirt but we took it out):
I'd also recommend RK Bridal and Wedding Atellier. RK Bridal has EVERYTHING (but they do not take appointments) and Wedding Atellier has their whole showroom arranged by dress details & shape.
do you have any inspiration pictures? what type of fabric are you looking for? Watters has a lot of natural waisted ballgowns without beading, mostly organza lace and tulle which are very soft and feminine but i'm not sure if that is what you are going for. Take a look at their website, and they are sold at RK bridal and lovely bridal both in manhattan.
I'm not quite sure what fabric I want - I'm open to anything but tons of beading I think. I want something traditional, but I don't want to look like a disney princess either hahaa so hoping to find an elegant ballgown of some sort...

I think Priscilla of Bostons PL300 is so elegant, a ballgown, and totally beautiful.
The Wedding Salon of Manhasset? I was just thinking of going there, Bridal Reflections, and Kleinfeld's myself this summer when I start dress shopping. I don't know of any other places really. Hope you find your dress!
I vote for RK bridal. Go when they 1st open, 11am on a weekday and you will get great service.
Amsale, perhaps? I remember they had a TON of ballgowns - some more traditional, some with a modern flair. I tried on a bunch and loved them, but my body's not good for ballgowns. Good luck and keep us posted! :)

I've been to Kleinfeld's, Bridal Reflections, POB & Pronovias.....but I haven't found THE dress yet. (although I have a few that I like)
I'm looking for something a-line or ballgown with a natural waist and am finding that many places don't have much to chose from if you don't want trumpet/mermaid. Also, I'm not into a ton of beading & that limits my options a lot!
Does anyone have any suggestions in NYC, Long Island, CT area??
