- Wedding: October 2012
We want to have contra dancing for our wedding. Its normally danced in two long lines with a partner and with another couple… and you end up moving up and down the line as you dance so you end up dancing with everyone in just one dance. It orginiated from a English country dance. Its really easy. Each dance is different and there is a good bit of spinning. So you have to have a caller and a band. There is a local contra dancing group around me. So my FI and I go to the dances. We have some leads on the band and a caller. Its not too expensive for three hours. Its great because it will get people afraid of dancing up on the dance floor and its perfect for all age groups.
That being said I don’t want contra all night. Its exhusting and I want some big band music and some 80s music played as well. My first dance is a big band dance so I need a DJ. Well I guess I don’t need a DJ for that bit but I do need an MC. I assume the MC/DJ I hire will be the same person. I also want to do the funky chicken, the electric slide and other party favorites.
I imagine I need the DJ/MC to annouce the arrival of the wedding party at the reception and to annouce eating times (we are having a buffet). Then the first dance. I’d like to do some contra dancing after with inbetween some of the party favorites for band breaks. Then after the three hours for the band just switch over to the DJ. I figure the DJ will be more for the hard core parties (we get our location till 2AM, not counting clean up).
I’m trying to imagine how this would work. Our reception is at a dance studio which is already wired for a sound system. I don’t know if that will matter to the DJ/MC or not cost wise… I’m trying to figure out when the band would set up and break down without bothering guests.
Has anyone does this? How does it work logistics wise? I feel weired hiring a DJ/MC to annouce guests/dinner etc and then to basically sit around for three hours unless the band is taking a break but I imagine thats what would work best? And then I don’t know how it would best work for the set up/break down of the band.Would the band set up before the dinner?
